Crank Brothers pedals (such as the Eggbeaters) work very much like SPD's.
The cleat size and hole spacing are fully compatible.

Some Shimano road shoes don't have recesses and use cleats that have
pontoons for walking (not as practical/comfortable as the recessed
cleats).

What you are generally looking for is shoes described as mountain bike or
ATB shoes. These generally have the recesses the others have mentioned. I
guess you could have an SPD bolt pattern without the recess- not sure if
anyone does this, though.

Some are also simply called "recreational cycling" shoes or "touring"
shoes.

I've found that with the last pair of Lake mtb shoes I had, the cleat
wasn't fully recessed enough to not "click" a bit on tile floors.

Thanks to everyone for their replies. If I correctly understand what
has been said, 'SPD compatible' generally means the shoes will accept a
recessed cleat for ease of walking and that the Crank Brothers' system
provides similar benefits.
