About the same as last year: 5:48 on my watch, 5:54 officially.
Discrepancy because the start mat isn't chip-timed, and the M35-39 heat
is large enough that I started several rows back, mostly behind guys
carrying an extra 30-50 pounds who sprinted the first few hundred
meters then slowed to a Gallowalk. I may have gotten a little careless
with my elbows at about this point in the race.
Not much to say about my six minutes, it goes by pretty quick and at
that pace I'm pretty focused on the running, not on picking up details
for future storytelling.
Didn't meet DR because I was running, guess what, late and felt I
needed my whole prerace 30 min (would've liked at least 45) for warmup.
His heat was 15 min prior to mine. So I ran easily 15-20 mins then
did about 8 x 20 sec strides of increasing pace.
Exited Central Park at what I thought was where I had entered it near
the 80th street starting line, but turned out to be half mile away with
just enough time to jog back to the start, pee, and hop into the fray
with 15 sec to spare.
1/4: 1:23 (1:23)
1/2: 2:59 (1:36) (yeah, it's uphill)
3/4: 4:24 (1:25)
end: 5:48 (1:24)
I can imagine squeezing out another couple seconds with superior
motivation (I did run quite hard but not to the point of puking),
another minute or two to catch my breath before the start, lighter
flats (than the 9 oz Racer ST's I wore because I notched 12 mi
including wu & cd), and lining up in front of all the tubby ex-football
dudes who would later become obstacles.
But not more than a handful of seconds: I'm clearly never gonna be a
blazing miler. Though I could surprise a few on a consistently
downhill mile...
Caught up with Lance after his heat. Ladies (and Anders), I'm here to
tell ya, he's a handsomer devil in person than in his photos. In fact
I can say without hesitation that Lance and I are the best looking
fellas in the ng. He was disppointed with his performance, but I'd be
ecstatic if I could run :30 faster in four years when I've reached his
geriatric age.
As Lance and I agreed, the highlight of the day was to be watching the
age 70+ runners cross the finish. A number of men and ladies in their
70's and 80's, even a 90-something guy, moving very very well. 82 year
old in 7:11, 70 YO in 6 flat - wow!
