There was an article posted not so long ago (the other day) in the newspaper
saying that the cancer incidence was getting so high and the costs of
treatments so high that it would cripple the national health service in the

The incidence is certainly not changing dramatically, on the figures, but
the costs are escalating due to .

1. a greater use of combined modalities in treatment (e.g. surgery plus
adjuavnt radiotherapy and/or chemotherapy).

2. More accurate but expensive tests used in diagnosis, staging, and
surveillance.

3. New options in treatment in the form of hormonal antagonists,
immunological methods, monoclonal antibodies and chemotherapeutic agents
with activity against cancers previously not suscptible. Also new
operations, such as for the removal of lung and liver secondaries.
