Question: Which is harder to learn?

    - BC
    - Coasting
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Just wondering
which have you found harder to learn coasting or BC?

    Cheers

My tea's gone cold I'm wondering why I.. got out of bed at all
The morning rain clouds up my window.. and I can't see at all
And even if I could it'll all be gray, but your picture on my wall
It reminds me, that it's not so bad, it's not so bad.. bad... bad

  4. BC is definitely not easy, but it's easy to see how it is easier than
coasting. With the BC your feet are right there near the axle, but when
(normal position) coasting your feet are much further away.

Also I imagine the readers here have much more experience riding BCs
than with coasting, so many respondants may be saying coasting is
harder because they don't know how to.

Well it certainly is harder to learn, otherwise I could learn to coast
in a day. Learning to BC is perdy darn easy compared to *trying* to
    learn to coast.

    What?

Anyway how much harder is it to learn on a bc with pegs(at axles) or
plates (below axles). I made one out of my front bmx wheel and put pegs
    on it.

I learnt to coast in a day. Mind you, I could already glide
proficiently when I learnt. Assuming you do not already have a high
level of freestyle skill, I believe BC wheeling is much easier to pick
    up.

To learn coasting it is helpful to use the following progression
    -Learn one foot riding
    -Learn wheel walk
    -Learn one foot wheel walk
    -Learn pull gliding
-Learn coasting (or possibly pull coasting first)

By contrast to learn BC wheeling you use the following progression
-learn to be pulled along (similar to pull coasting)
-learn to let go and coast by yourself

After watching half a dozen people start to get the hang of a BC wheel
in the space of one afternoon I think I am safe concluding that BC
wheeling is probably easier to pick up. In terms of skill level the
riders were all around level 4. Most of them could not glide or even
wheel walk, skills which take a long time to pick up and are almost
essential stepping stones to coasting on a normal unicycle.

  14. Yeah I've spent longer trying to coast than BC wheel and I can't do
either but I'm still worse at coasting. Thanks to Peter Bier (the
coasting king!) and Tony for their patience (and bravery) with dragging
me around on the BC wheel, I really want one now, is there a record for
distance travelled? That would make some sweet camera footage if you
found a good line with enough slope through town!

Has anybody designed or made a BC wheel without the massive bolts that
stick out where you're supposed to stand? They gave me big bruises just
near the arch of my foot, it's like the 1st generation KH cranks with
    nubs all over again.

note: wow, I've posted enough messages now to've done 1 a day for a
    year!

yes, and so with BC your weight "hangs" below the ax (=more "stable"😉,
while with unicycling it "sits" on the seat (=less "stable"😉.
    Corrections while 'BC'ing'
    (http://unicyclist.org/cont/play.cfm?pi=w320240bc_ride) are almost only
made by the arc of your back,
corrections while unicycle-coasting are made both with your back, but
morely(depending per person?) by pushing/pulling the frame underneath
you (done with your feet). That is... for 'coasting feet-in'
    For 'coasting with feet out'
    (http://unicyclist.org/cont/play.cfm?pi=s320240coast1ftc) counts the
same, but there your weigth is more being on the fork-crown, and even
below (the cat-tail-alike-functioning-leg which does the most of weight
moving in this case, in stead of your back).

So, (again) I think it's a wierd comparison of 3 different things.

Woaw! you've lost me! What is coasting with feet out? sounds like a
good way to get hurt! as for the cat-tail-alike-functioning-leg, sounds
    like a coded message!

any tips for those of us newbies who (gasp) can't even coast yet? I
started yesterday, and it didn't work very well!

As for those saying learning to bc is easy, keep it to yourselves! I
learned to coast a bc over a period of months when nobody around me
even knew that ultimates and bc's existed, and many people told me that
they should be impossible to ride, and I was bound to kill myself!

Well... spend more than one day on it.

    Dunno.

As coasting is the only skill where you dont control your speed...
you'll have to adjust the position of the uni and your body.

Don't go too fast, no need for it, will only make it scared.

Don't make praying-muslim-movents, but only move your arm horizontal
(like swimming, but then with arms straight).

    Look forward, into the horizon.

As I asume you coast with both feet in, squeeze you knees (tight, but
without hurting yourself) under the seat, so the uni becomes an
    extension of your hips.

Don!t hold your breath, relax all of your muscles (except the ones you
    really use).
