My winter training bike currently has a 9sp Campagnolo Racing Triple chainset, plus a Daytona long-cage rear mech, and a Daytona triple front mech. Levers are Daytona, and I think these parts are all from the year 2000 line-up.
Having packed the race bike away for the winter, my knees are really noticing the extra wide distance (q-factor) between the pedals with the triple. As I never use the inner ring of the triple anyway and have the opportunity to buy a used chorus 10 speed double chainset cheaply, I was wondering what would be involved in migrating this setup to a double. Although the chainset I have in mind is a 10 speed, I'm happy to keep the bike as a 9speed if this means having to swap fewer components.
I know that in addition to the chorus 10 speed chainset I'd need a matching 102mm chorus/record BB; I'm less sure whether the rear mech / front mech and daytona ergo would need to be replaced also. If these do need replacing, do I need 9 speed versions or will 10speed models be backwards compatible?

In case you have a 115.5mm BB (intended for triple + oversize seat tube), you might actually find a 111mm works ok with your cranks. Sometimes filing back of mech helps if seat tube obstructs on inner position.

Daytona Ergos are not indexed so work with all chainsets. Mechs won't need changing although a short cage rear mech would save a few grams. Chainset will be OK with a 9-speed chain.
10-speed rear mechs index with 2001+ 9-speed Ergos, though the jockey wheels benefit from 9-speed washers in the one I use.

All you need is the crank and BB. All else is compatible w/o change or modification. Even a '10s' crank. Works fine with a 9s or even 8s chain. The triple fd will shift the double fine and the long cage rear will work fine also.

I am fairly certain Mr. Biggs suggested making sure the current bottom bracket on the Racing Triple crankset is the 111 mm length instead of the 115 mm length. If he is using the 115 and can switch it for the 111, then this would be a $19.99 way to get a 4 mm reduction in Q factor.
Another possible solution if he currently has the 111 mm bottom bracket is to see if he can get a Centaur/Veloce/Daytona/Athena double crankset for cheap. I believe the Q factor for a Chorus double with its 102 mm bottom bracket is the same as the Centaur/etc. double with its 111 mm bottom bracket. It may be cheaper to get a new Centaur/etc. double than the used Chorus he mentions and a new 102 mm bottom bracket.
Or he could just pick out whichever double crank and bottom bracket combination he wants with the Q factor he wants and put it on.

The current BB is 111mm - the option of pairing this with a Centaur/Veloce/Daytona/Athena double is a good one taht hadn't occured to me; however I'm in the lucky position to be able to get the used Chorus for the price of a couple of beers so I'll go with this option.

I meant use a 111 with the existing Racing T cranks. That would reduce the q without having to get new cranks (only if current BB is 115.5, that is).
