Bought a Beto (yep, never heard of them either) in Wiggle's sale a few months ago. Seems to do the
job and for 20 quid I'm not complaining even if it does break in a few years

I'm not sure how long the seals are supposed to last, but my blackburn does not seem to seal quite
so well as when I first got it, as there is a slight hissing when it's connected up, but it has been
used every day for 6 months as my tyres seem to drop from 120psi to about 95psi over a 24 hour
period. Probably just needs a new washer.

Yup my Beto has been going strong for a good few years now. Well worth £20.

Silca (Super Pista) for me too. Strong very powerful pump for £28.

Mine is making a groaning/wheezing noise on the downstroke, though. Any ideas what could be causing
that? Still works ok, just sounds ill.

Mine's still okay, but I gave it to flatmate after taking advantage of an EBC offer on a Topeak
JoeBlow, an altogether more serious piece of kit. The two principal advantages over the Zefal
are a better gauge and, more importantly, a twin head so no pratting about with adapters if I'm
doing prestas.

Had the JB a couple of years now, no problems at all.

Sounds like the leather seal is out of shape, you don' store it lying down by any chance do you? I
just paid £27 for my new one, I'm sure I paid about that for the one I bought in 1980 without a
gauge strangely enough.

I bought a 20 quid Sapo one from ProBikeKit a couple of years ago. I later bought an adapter to make
presta/shraeder changes easier (about a fiver). It works well enough.

I had a Silca which vibrated itself to bits while being ransported in the luggage box on my
bike-transporting trailer. The barrel makes an excellent tool for fitting headset races to fork
crowns (1" steerer only), or for applying confidence to nervous wives whose husbands are working
nights when the shed got burgled.

I had a Specialized. The gauge broke, and later the cap thingy at the top of the barrel repeatedly
failed to stay put.

I had a Zefal. It was useless.

I now have a Topeak Joe Blow Pro, which is the mutt's nuts.

So what's the best replacement for the Silca head ? I'm sure it's great on Presta, but it is pretty
rubbish if you only ever use Schraders.

Yes, it must be stored standing up, if it lies down for a long period the leather seal goes out of
shape, tip* take out the seal, clean it up, warm up some neutral shoe polish and work it into the
seal with your fingers until the seal feels really supple, then reassemble.

Topeak JoeBlow - seems to be the dogs. I wonder how accurate the gauge is though, I've just had an
only slightly worn tyre part company from the wire - some miles from home unfortunately. Still, me
cleats are nice and shiny now ;-)
