Skate Wings = didn't know fish could fly

Well now, we had suicidal fish. A few years back we had ponds & the
larger gold fish would jump out to their deaths. They likely saw it as
a better fate than waiting for the neighbourhood cats to visit their
favourite sushi bar 😉

OB Food: Going to grill 1/2 lb. of andouille sausage and the last of the
zucchini squash today. A nice combination of spicy meat and a grilled
veggie. As usual, I'll brush the zucchini with a little olive oil, sprinkle
with salt & pepper and a little dried basil or marjoram (whatever comes
first from the spice rack).

I've seen flying fish on the ferry from Long Beach/Los Angeles to Catalina
Island. Very high on the cool-o-meter. Also cool, and something I doubt
I'll ever see, is manta rays breaching:

Well, they do... flying fish actually can soar through the air for
relatively short distances.

My father was working on fishing boats off Chile and the Galapagos
Islands back in the 40ies. Told me they often saw manta rays jumping
high out of the water. And they had lots of flying fish land in the boat
(they take to the air when pursued by a predator, apparently). I had
one, stuffed with tobacco, as a kid. Maybe thumb-thickness, 5" long,
with a wingspan of 6-7". Amazing critter (and a nice Havanna scent).

Flying fish are common in the Gulf Stream. In my Navy days, we'd often see a
fish come out of the water, spread its triangular (and pretty-much
transparent) pectoral fins and glide for twenty feet or more.
