  1. Hey,

Does anybody have experience playing unicycle polo with bicyclists -
    either as teammates or opponents?

    Who has the advantage?

I figure bikes are faster, but unicycles are more manuerable and can go
    backwards.

There are some people who have started playing bike polo here in Ithaca,
NY and I'm considering joining them on the unicycle.

  2. Slightly off topic but still related:

I've played bicycle soccer against other bicyclists while on a unicycle.
The bicyclists definately had an advantage! :-)
To see why, try kicking a ball while riding a unicycle.

With polo I think things could even out quite nicely. I will be
interested to hear how it goes.

  3. I had a great time Friday evening playing polo with the bicyclists from
the Finger Lakes Cycling Club. At first some people were skeptical that
it could be done on a unicycle, but by the end they were all convinced
that it worked out pretty well, especially since I was on the winning
team every time. I don't know if that was because of me, but I was
    definitely able to contribute.

The bikers could certainly ride faster to chase down a loose ball, but I
had the advantage of being able to manuever well in a tight pack, so I
think it worked out well to have a mixed team. I think being able to
ride backwards confidently is a very useful skill in unicyle polo, so
I'll need to practice that. It took me a little while to get the hang
of swinging hard without throwing off my balance, but in the end I got
    used to it.

I fell off a lot, but I only have one small bruise, from banging the
inside of my right knee against the frame repeatedly.

The bikers were certainly welcoming, and even impressed a little bit.
So, if you have the opportunity to play polo on your unicycle with
bicyclists, take it. Or if you want to play unicycle polo but don't
have enough unicyclists, invite some bikers.

  4. I had another great day playing unicycle polo with the bicyclists on
Saturday. There were two of us on unicycles, and 5 bicyclists.

Here are some pictures for your enjoyment:

I'm wearing the yellow helmet, and my friend Robbert is wearing the
    blue jersey.

  5. I've been playing for over a year now. It is such a great sport! We play
in Winter Park, FL; rent a soccer field under the lights every Wed.
night. I've played a couple of times on my Uni, but just can't cover
enough ground on one wheel. It did work out well, however, playing
    goalie.

We play for 1 1/2 - 2 hours and it is grueling riding in the grass that
    long. So good for you.

I'm also coming off a nasty injury from playing on my bike. Was taken
out from behind, landed on another bike, broke my wrist in 3 places. So
be cool and play safe cause it can get out of hand. You should be safe
    on your uni though.

It would probably help getting a longer shaft for Uni playing. It's
just is a little too short for that. Also noticed from the pics that
you are the only one who knows how to wrap the strap around your thumb
and the back of your hand. You should probably clue the others in, or
not! You need some advantage cause you are a wheel down.

  6. I agree that it is a great sport - hopefully we'll get an all unicycle
    game going this weekend.

I am certainly tired after we get done playing, especially from trying
to beat the bicyclists on fast breaks.

There were quite a few collisions when we first started playing, but
everybody is getting better and we try to respect the right-of-way
rules. So, nobody has been injured yet. Sorry to hear about your
    broken wrist.

I am using a 38 inch shaft, which gives me a bit more reach than the
32-34 inch ones that the bikers use, but I definitely notice that the
longer one throws me off balance more.

It's funny that you noticed the strap - I just learned it last time we
played. I guess it was fresh in my head.
