  1. The guy gets into the pool and swims a furious crawl to the other end of the
lane. He then stands there and bobs up and down about a dozen times before
swimming back to the head of the lane. Then, he stands there and bobs up
and down. He does this over and over.

Can anyone tell me what he is achieving by this bouncing up and down? I can
see he could get his heart rate up but the swimming alone would do that. Is
this some kind of recognized drill that I haven't heard of?

It could just be his odd way of counting down the seconds until the next
lap. Is there a lap clock there?

    Best,

Mark (in Tx too, but not the guy that you saw today)

Not sure, but I've seen people doing it here in St. Catharines,
Ontario at the YMCA. Can't figure out what it's supposed to do, maybe
    it's a secret society.

At first I thought it was what I call "My Girlfriend is Here" Crawl,
where the guy foams his way down one length as fast as he can, then
spends 20 minutes trying to tell her how impressive his speed is while
everyone else does lap after lap...

heh heh. All I could think of was, "wow, what a sprint and too bad no
    stamina!"

He's doing bobs, which are something that my colleigate (sp) swimmer
swimming tutor was always trying to get me to do. She always suggested
doing them between sets/lengths etc anytime you pause. I don't really
understand what the point of them is once you've learned to swim. They
are a sort of rhythmic breathing exercise.
Once the suit is on, I want to go forward. People try talking to me and
I ask myself why are these people bothering me? And then I remember
that they are my friends who I usually like to and want to talk to...

I was thinking it was like those people that keep running
in place while waiting for traffic to clear.
