I seduced Rob away from his University duties (let those lousy ME
students wait a while! They'll live!) and we were out and about for a
couple hours. OK, I didn't actually seduce him from anything (this
time) - his plan was to go to Niece Patty's to collect his half case of
some red wine that they ordered from Madonna Vineyards in Sonoma a week
and a half back when we were there. Done.
Since we were already headed east, I told him, in my well-known role as
SWMBO, that he could buy me lunch at Cecil's on Cleveland in St. Paul.
I wanted to do some shopping but he didn't need to know that just then.
We took the long way getting there. Punitive on my part.
We got to Cecil's at 11:30. None too soon. We ordered - Rob had their
BBQ beef sammich with their sweet-sour slaw; I ordered a Rueben on dark
pumpernickle. Interesting thing with that - new to me: they mix some
sour cream with the kraut. Tasty.
While we waited for our order, and because I know how impatient Rob is
with life in general, I did my shopping in the other part of the place.
I went in for schmaltz, right? I got that. $3 for about a half pint,
frozen, Empire brand, Kosher for Passover. And I got two baby challahs,
two onion rolls, 1/4# corned beef, two boxes of frozen blintzes (cherry
and cheese), two packages of egg bow ties, a scoop of chopped liver
(notice I did not say chopped CHICKEN liver), a package of frozen potato
knishes AND a loaf of cranberry walnut bread - fresh crans, not dried,
and boy is it GOOD!! Twenty bucks for all of it. I could deal.
From there we headed south then west to Haskell's Liquor Store in west
Bloomington to pick up a couple bottles of Beaujolais Nouveau for next
week's Thanksgiving Feast at the Girlchild's. If one of those bottles
makes it north, it will be worthy of giving thanks. The new beaujolais
is the only red wine I like. Believe we'll bring a bottle of my
birthday Slovakian riesling, too. And a couple bottles of some soda pop
wine (Arbor Mist comes to mind). And just shut up about the other two
being soda pop wines, too, ok? I like what I like.
Would you believe that they don't serve kasha varnishkes at Cecil's?
They don't. Heathens. They don't pile the corned beef on the sammich
the way the Second Avenue Deli does, either. Guess I gotta go to New
York again!
I'll make another batch of the kasha with my new ingredients. And not
drown the kasha this time.
