US Cyclocross Champions

Nestor Evancevich created a list of cyclocross champions that goes back
years before 1975. Mary Evancevich, or possibly Tiger Johnson, may know
where the list is.

Among last year's winners the geezer award goes to
50+ winner Paul Curley who first shows up in the 1979
results. This beats Tilford by two years.

I don't know, but it was revealed recently by the commentators during a
cyclocross race that Nijs has 50 (fifty) world championship jerseys in the
closet, to always have a nice clean white shirt for training and racing.
And I think he sleeps in them.

Champions of what? The ABLA/USCF didn't get into the business
of running a 'cross national championship until 1975.

One thing about living in Dakota, Illinois, it is not a town that
is easy to disappear in. I looked up Tyger's Bike and Music and
Leroy (Tyger) Johnson answered the phone.

The story that I got was that the ABLA was running national
championships but that no one at the office in New York was
keeping track of the results. Nestor came in to the picture in
the late 1980s with an effort, eventually successful, to get
the earlier races recognized.

My source, 'Ten Years of Championship Bicycle Racing', published
in 1983 by the Vermont version of Velo-news, says that national
cyclocross championships were first authorized in 1975.

I asked Tyger to copy and send me anything he has on those earlier
races. He says that somewhere he has a copy of the race program
from the KC nationals that lists winners going back to 1963.

place in the elite race.

4th Place. He was 3rd in elites the the day after he rolled a tire in
the last lap of U23 that TJ went on to win. TJ got 3rd that year at
worlds, IIRC. JP didnt make the trip.

Timmy sooo woulda got beat that year. He had no sprint back then, was
still racing MTB. Of course, same thing happened to Tim in Baltimore
when he was OTF and flatted then Todd Wells won. Thats bike racing.

4th was Jonathan's worst result in elite nationals EVER, and has done
them every year that he has gone to nationals, even as junior, except
Kansas City where he was 6th.

That place was no fun. We ended up at a Gay Hispanic gang banger bar,
5 of us guys and one girl, in the seediest part of a seedy city. It
was frightening. We left. I hated that year.

I hope its better in 07 and 08.
