What I intended to do when I came to the end of the alley was stop, check for traffic, and proceed
by turning right out onto actual streets.

Someone driving a Fiero was in a hurry to avoid the light at the intersection decided it'd be a good
idea to take a turn going the WRONG way into a one-way alley (signs were posted at the entrance: One
Way, Do Not Enter, etc.)

He turned right, into the alley, and gunned it before seeing me...

3 major lacerations, ruptured blood vessel. My hand swelled up to the point where it looked like I
had a goose egg under my skin. No long-term damage, and they used that super-glue type stuff to
close it up.

Fiero driver did NOT stop, called police from pay phone. Operator took my description of the car
over the phone, they put out an APB. They did not find the car...

Is that with your new bike William.... s**t is the bike ok?

Traffic (heavy, light): heavy, mostly stopped at 'rush' hour

Injury: not really. sore shoulder the next day scraped elbow, ankle

Description: car turned in front of me i hit fender bike went flying in direction of car travel
tried to stop, was braking i think i just fell on my left side as the bike was swept along
handlebars crooked, i straightened police car happened by, we filed report i rode home

a woman in a ford explorer, darkly tinted glass, ran into me at an intersection because she thought
it was AMUSING. I jumped up onto the bumper to keep from getting crushed. she slammed on the brakes
at 4 mph. after a 100 foot approach from a stop-she wuz running the light I fell off the bumper. the
bike went under the truck(still here and runnnig inbent but the hubs were brindled and when i hit
the ground my pack, holding an antique sony fm tuner, slammed me right in the face. thru the chin
and into the jaw. west palm beach. a no man's land. new yorkers looking for whatever on antique dual
highway median stripped wowow! here on the gulf in fort meyers, broad friendly bike paths and
refried farmers from ohio ect. no problem. still occasionally dangerous but a different planet.
SOMEBODY ASKED TONGUE IN CHECK-IS COMMUTING DANGEROPUS??? I commute six days. think of it as skiing
twice a day.nbefore living ingator land, i white water canoed and at last found delight in swimming
the creek at hi water. That's bike commuting. now, carry your kid down the rapids??? d-u-m-b.

they're countless, it seems, but my two most inflammatory..

1) cruising downtown new haven at midnight. it was a brisk spring evening, i was on a good well lit
road returning from escorting a friend home, and i was feelign energetic. got out of the saddle
and hammered away, on seemingly empty roads. ahead of me, a green light. I sped up to catch it,
and was probably going around 25-30 when i hit the intersection, a blind urban 4-way stoplight.
much to my dismay, a trash truck was running the light at a pretty good clip. with a fraction of
a second to think, i chose maintaining the speed and hopefully beating it through the
intersection, instead of slamming on the brakes, possibly washing out, and falling under the
truck. i made it, by a hair. i was *very* glad there was no second car/truck shadowing the truck
in the next lane. i would feel guilty in this situation becuase i had no light at this time, but
the intersection was such that even if i had the result would have been the same. i caught the
truck and attempted to tell the driver what i thoguht about all this, but he just waved me on.

2) rain, again at night, again in new haven. i had just been working on a friend's bike, a tiny tiny
80's road frame with steel rims and sorry brakes. i generally think of myself as a skilled and
agile cyclist in traffic, but riding this bike made me vulnerable, sluggish, and uncomfortable. i
was riding it over to her house, coasting in the middle lane with a red light two hundred feet
away, signaling right. a car pulled up on my right, and as i moved to the right side fo the lane
started honking at me. i stayed straight, waiting for it to slow down so i could get in the right
lane. it honked again, and then the driver rolled down his window and started yelling at me.
doing my best to not fall off the tiny vulernable essentially brakeless bike, i asked the driver
what his problem was, or some such. not a good move. he chased me to the stoplight trying to hit
me with his open car door. to this day it burns me. if id been on my own bike, i think i would
have broken his windshield and left him in the rain to think things over.

Midday, college town.

My Lab/Chesapeake cross (100+ lb dog) bolted out into the street between two parked cars (the street
was a little-used one way deal with a vacant lot directly across the street in which I threw a
frisbee for the dog daily).

A guy on a beater 10 speed hit my dog broadside and launched over the handlebars. No helmet (this
was 1978). Major road rash on his palms, bumps and bruises, front wheel potato-chipped, front fork
bent back past the down tube.

Dog rolled over, jumped to her feet, and got right in the face of the poor guy lying half dead and
bleeding in the street.

He limped to the campus health center (right down the block) and was basically OK.

Dog never showed any injury whatsoever.
