  1. Hey all.. I was looking at Bike Nashbar and noticed they have the Hutchinson Top Slick tires I was
interested in onsale for $9.95 for 1.0" or 1.2". These are the "GOLD" ATB tire versions, which
according to the Hutchinson site are better than the regular version. (higher pressure, 127 tpi
casing, etc) They are here: nashbar.comprofile.cfm
    &sku=9783&storetype=&estoreid=

They also sell the regular "Hutchinson Top Slick ATB Tire", it seems for two different prices. I
    can't tell the difference.

    $12.99 (reg. $24.99) nashbar.comprofile.cfm
    04&storetype=&estoreid=

    $19.99 nashbar.comprofile.cfm
    &estoreid=

So, I'm confused about which to get. Obviously sounds like the GOLD ones are the best deal (aside
    from those ugly yellow stripes).

But here's what I'm most confused about: Can I put these on my mountain bike no probs (with the
right inner tubes of course, and probaby some higher end rim tape for the extra pressure). I
measured my rims and they are about 24mm across on the outside, and I currently have 26x2" knobbies
on there now. I'd like to go with the Gold Top Slicks 26x1" or even the 1.2"'s.

The Gold 1.2" seems to be the fastest tire I've used on an MTB. Works great. I've only got it on the
back, but if these from Nashbar are folding, I might buy one for the front too.

  3. Why didn't you use the 1.0"'s? Just a bit of extra comfort?

Your rims are wide enough that the 26x1 tires will fit and ride poorly IMO, being a little wider
than the inflated size of a so-called 1" tire. I have done a similar mismatch (with Specialized
Turbo S ATB tires on Ritchey Vantage Comp rims) but it works much, much better with rims in the 19mm
range, which are a little narrower than the tire.

Use the 1.2" tires or one of the several other 1.25-1.3" choices available. Conti Avenue 26x1.3
tires are the fastest-feeling I've tried in that size range. Avocet make a 1.25" FasGrip slick, and
those tires are well known to be quite fast-rolling.

I haven't tried that specific tire, but I've had no problems running similar tires on my Mtn
bike/paved road commuter. I've had good results with Specialized Fat boys and Ritchey Tom Slicks. I
tried one of the $30 or so Continental's once and had the sidewall blow out after about 200 miles,
but that was only on a single tire, and I've had fine results from other Contis.

So I'd say go for it, assuming you are planning to use these for smooth surfaces. I've used this
bike with slicks on hard dirt singletrack also - they were fine there too.

I've used the Top Slick Basic 1.2" (wire bead), the Airlight (folding) in 1" and the Gold (folding)
in 1.2". The Basic has more rubber than either of the other two, and so is heavier but more durable.

I'm running the Airlight 1" tyres on a pair of Mavic 517 rims. The rims measure 21.6mm in overall
width. For your rim I'd use the 1.2" versions. If you decide to go with the 1" version, I've found
    650c tubes a better fit.

Clearance from Cambria. I don't think the 1.0" was an option. I was replacing a damaged 32mm Fat Boy
(still had a good one on the front). The 1.2" was fairly close in size. Also, like you, I'm not sure
1.0" is a great tire size for an MTB rim.

I used to have a compact crank on the bike (44t big ring). With the road tires, the bike works
better with a 48t big ring. If I went down to 1.0, I'm not sure 48t would be enough.

These Hutchinsons are sized accurately. A 1" Airlight measures 25.5mm on a Mavic X517 rim. I agree
that the 1.2" is a better match to the rim in question.

  9. Thanks james.. I'll probably go 1.2". Not really a stickler for stuff like that. .2" isnt' going to
    do anything for me anyways.

1." Tom Slicks (Performance has them) at 100 p.s.i. are fine on both my mountain bikes (Treks) and
on my 517 rims I use for swapping wheels in and out.. Have used these tires for several years, no
problems. Also have used some other 1.0" tires that I've found on sale from time to time. Again,
no problems (or "issues" in doofus-speak). I use the Nashbar narrowest tubes: seem to have fewer
flats than those from Performance, but that's probably just a coincidence.
