I've built with rims like this for years. They might look a bit odd at first, but they do work well.
Even before Ritchey started this with his WCS OCR rims, I was drilling my own Weinmann blanks in the
late 70's. It works. -

wee bit too light for my taste. I would love to see some beefier rims also be offset.But the idea is a good one, making the left side spoke tension higher in relation to the right.

direction. The only problem I see with it is that no one makes narrow (21mm or smaller) rims with
offset drilling and eyelets. No space, it seems. So, like it or not, brass nipples are called for.
It's not the end of the world, it just removes an option.Of course, offset drilling won't make a poorly made rim into a good one. It should make a well made
rim a little better, but neither I nor anyone I've spoken with can say how much. One can produce
well built rear wheels with and without offset drilling.Bontrager Fairlanes are wider rims, with offset drillings and eyelets. I've built with them and like

rims. It would seem reasonable for wider rims like the Fairlane. But Bontrager/Trek cheapo-ed out by
only using single eyelets and increasing weight. -

They do apparently believe in OCR. Their entire line is available with it now.
Wouldn't it make more sense for MTB wheels to have 36? A lot of them do take quite a bit of abuse
off road. Spoke count is also related to air resistance but at the lower average speeds of
off-roading I would think this would not matter.Velocity's OC road rims are available with 36 but they're only 20mm wide. They also have an OC MTB
rim--available with 36 of course.Fairlanes are only available with 32 or 48 through most sources though apparently you can get them
with 36 from Rivendell. I'm not sure why they wouldn't just make these in 36 hole normally. The
Fairlane seems like a good choice for touring.Are there any other off-center rims out there?

However, there are certain practical limitations that might mean it will be difficult to achieve.For a start you need a rim with the number of spoke holes in it divisible by three.
If you use a 36 hole rim, that means you will have 24 spokes on the drive side of the wheel and 12
on the other. That means you will need a hub suitable for a 48 spoke rear wheel to build the wheel.
They are not easy to get. Anyone know if one exists for a slide on cluster system?You could use a 24 hole rim. That would mean 16 spokes on the drive side and only 8 spokes on the

I can only speak from my own (very limited) experience: I have two sets of Speed Dream wheels build
with an 8:16 left:right spoking pattern and both have been maintenance-free over 3 years of varied
use, including racing.A further limitation on this type of pattern is that you probably shouldn't use rims on which the
spoke holes are offset alternately left and right to accomodate spokes from the left and right hub
flanges. If you use the 1:2 spoking pattern on a rim with offset, half the spokes will be coming
from the 'wrong' side of the rim, and I don't think this would be a good idea.Nigel Grinter

It would be nice to find a 130mm hub cassette with more than 36 spokes. I have been toying with the
idea of getting a 24-spoke hub and a drill. Yeah, I know it would void the warrantee. It would be
saner with a large-flange hub, but those don't exist any more, either.--

Maybe mine's different. I have a 145mm FH-HF07 with 14mm of spacers on the left side.
