are they really worth it? im considering shelling out the money for one, but I want to know whether it will improve my training that much, if any....does anyone here have one and could you talk about how you like it/ dislike it? any comments or feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Using a HRM is a very personal issue - some swear by 'em, some say they are a waste of money.
IMHO, I find a HRM to be invaluable and have been using one for almost 15 years 🙂 Whilst I have no argument with the Power Training concept (cannot justify the $$ for numerous bikes).
I find that using a HRM along with RPE to be quite effective, especially on the trainer where HR can be quite closely regulated and whilst doing long climbing intervals (8:00 to 12:00 minutes). Also good for Recovery rides but are merely a handlebar ornament when group riding 😉
I use a Polar S625X with speed sensor on my Trek 5500 and with a speed and cadence sensor on an old Reynolds 653 frame I use mainly for training and wet weather - the info I am able to download after each session helps me review my progress and plan future sessions 😎
