  1. In my nearest local town, Dereham, there's a LBS - Paul's Cycles. I try to avoid going in there as
every time I have, I have encountered a less than helpful attitude to any requests for information
on bikes and indeed, an attitude of being totally ignored on a couple of occasions. On the other
hand, there's Specialised Cycles in Norwich, who is owned by Steve, who is absolutely *fantastic*
when it comes to any queries at all, is extremely helpful, knowledgeable, fair in his dealings etc.,
etc.. everytime I've crossed the threshold of his shop.

To get more to the point....

Vernon & I are thinking about getting Nathan a *basic* tourer/audax/winter hack type bike so he
doesn't get his race bike messed up over the winter. He has a mountain bike, but he loathes using it
and says he is highly uncomfortable on
it. He's a roadie ;-) We really don't want to - can't afford to - spend a lot of money on another
bike - even though one can't spend too much money on bikes, bike bits, or have too many bikes,
etc., etc., etc... ;-) So we have been looking around, checking out ads in the comic, looking on
the net, etc., etc. We've decided that poss something like a Dawes Horizon level spec/cost would
do the trick. It doesn't have to be a Dawes, but that sort of bike is possibly the solution to
    requirements.

So anyway - there's mucho looking around at what's on offer, new/second-hand, to see what's out
    there and costing it etc..

This morning I rang Specialised in Norwich - busy, but answerphone on. Left message for Steve to
call. A few minutes later he rang back, "What can I do for you, Helen?" So we chatted and he offered
suggestions on specs/costs and what he can do within certain price ranges and suggested Vernon
and/or I call in to discuss in detail and have a look at what he's got in stock and can put
together. All as it should be in a professional, helpful manner.

Now, as mentioned, we are looking around. So for this morning's constitutional ride, I cycled into
Dereham and called into Paul's Cycles on the off-chance there might be something there - he has had
Dawes stuff in there in the past. So I pulled up on my steed, parked it up, locked it & went into
the shop. I'm wearing a bright yellow cycle jersey, & bright yellow helmet and I'm not small. But
obviously this is a Klingon cloak of invisibility even here and not just out on the road, as I was
ignored as happened before in this shop.

There were a few non-mountain bikes there, as I had remembered so I thought I'd ask for some advice.
Shop guy walks past me, wheeling a bike, and I said, "Excuse me please, may I pick your brain about
some of these bikes." His response was, "I can only do one thing at a time and I'm busy." and he
wandered off. Now if he'd said, "I'll be with you in a minute" or, "I'll just put this bike away and
be with you as soon as I can." sort of thing, I'd have waited quite happily. But when he said, "I
can only do one thing at a time and I'm busy." I left the shop. Will I *ever* go back there - no.
This sort of has happened too often in this shop and he's now lost any chance of me buying anything
    from that business *ever*.

The contrast in reaction to potential customer query between Paul's Cycles and Specialised this
morning was amazing. Specialised Cycles got it absolutely spot on and Paul's Cycles got it
    completely wrong - again.

    Cheers, helen s

Oooh no, I reserve the violence for b*bs ;-P

I just won't ever use the shop and I won't recommend it to anyone. I will, however, highly recommend
Specialised in Norwich as I have done in the past due to the excellent service received then and
    continuing to receive now.

  4. Unfortunately this sort of treatment isn't only reserved for bike shops, although there is a certain
establishment in Lancashire who appear to be famous for it.The number of firms, big and small, who
don't respond to e-mails,letters or phone calls amazes me.Like you Helen, the ones that respond and
treat me like a human being usually get my business, the ones that don't,don't.

Ahhhhhh.... I see that the really rotten local bike shop is an international operation now. I've got one of these monsters in my home town. It's supposed to be **THE** bike shop and this spring when I stopped in when I was shopping for bikes. Yes, bikes, plural. My daughter, who is 7, acted like a 7 year old, pointing out every piece of biking equipment and excitedly saying "Daddy would like that for his bike". It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that we were there to buy bike stuff.

The staff ignored me. I spent 25 mins in the store without so much as a "hello, goodbye or kiss my [censored]" from the staff. In fact, she spent the entire time chatting up some guy who was just finishing his transaction at the cash when we walked in.

Finally fed up with this level of non-service, I left and was gladly relieved of the $2000+ by another bike shop who was more than willing to wait on me.

The flip side of the story is that I'm looking to upgrade my bike. I'm interested in the Trek touring bike. The problem is the rotten bike shop is the authorized Trek dealer in town. I'm waiting to hear from Trek if I'm bound under warranty to deal with the rotten bike shop. It'll be a make or break point on the decision to buy a Trek.

My response to that would have been to seek him out and casually say " I came in with the intention
of buying a <name of one of the more expensive bikes they stock> but obviously you are too busy to
want my money so I'll spend it with someone who isn't" and then leave before they can respond.
Leaves you with some satisfaction and who knows it might actually just bring home to him the
    potential consequences of his attitude.

Heheheh, buy an old (25 or more years) Landrover, preferably ratty, noisy etc for a couple of
hundred quid and drive to any 'Merlin' dealership .. They'll probably ask you to leave ...

Buy a very nice low mileage P reg Discovery, go to a Merlin dealership they'll try to sell you a new
one and then ignore you when you ask for the parts department or service deals ...

Borrow a brand new 03 registered Range Rover, go to same Merlin dealership and they'll _still_ think
you're an Oik 'cos it wasn't bought from them ....

Go to RCV in Kirk Sandall, Doncaster, and you've got the chance of coffee, a chat, a decent amount
of foc knowledge and a feeling of 'kinship' that almost demands you return there instead of
    bothering anyone else ... 😉

It isn't confined to cycle shops .. 😉

Yes, it's a weird shop isn't it? Long ago I gave up using them for advice, and more often than not
use H*lfords next door, at least for buying stuff when I do know what I'm looking for.

They always seem pretty rude at Paul's; I always get the impression I'm a nuisance to them when I
walk in there. I've also noticed their website is cr@p.

Sadly, I'm still too lardy to be able to cycle all the way to Norwich and back again - best I can do
now is 40 miles and Norwich for me is about 50 round trip - getting close though 😉

You can do it! Tell me, if you were cycling all the way into N'arch, what route would you use? I
cycled back from there some time ago, with Nathan, and we cycled out from the UEA along the Watton
road to Hingham where we had lunch in Lincoln's and then we cycled across the lanes via Woodrising
to Shipdham and then the lanes to the Wendling side of Scarning and then on to Wendling. The bit
from the UEA to Hingham was awful - the road seemed to go on forever!

That always amazes me. I've thought about going it alone in business (nothing to do with bikes)
before, but always been convinced I'd not be able to give good enough service in my field. Then you
encounter people who seem to make a good living while treating their customers like some kind of

Hmm, well I would probably take the lanes via Bradenham to Shipdham, then more lanes to Thorpe Row,
then Yaxham to pick up the old Norwich Road to East Tuddenham via Mattishall.

Just before you join the dreaded A47 at Honingham, I'd make a right to take Grange Lane around to
Easton, and from there the Dereham Road into Costessy and pick up the City cycle route from there.

Of course, that's just reading off the map here (Explorer 238) - the reality of it might be quite
    different.

As to whether I can do it - well, very possibly - although the last 40 miler I did pretty much wiped
me out for a couple of days; but hey - this time last year I was almost 40lbs heavier, and I would
get winded climbing stairs - so progress is being made!

Mike at Halfords in Bury St E. is an MTB racer and very knowledgable. However he's just filling in
during the summer until he starts his Mech Eng degree course at errr, may have been Manchester. The
stock in the shop looked quite comprehensive -- if entirely modern -- too.

For an oldfashioned LBS, with stock going back to when I was a teenager (don't ask!), Madgetts
Cycles in Diss are superb. Mick (the owner?) has an old Moulton _and_ sells 'bents, as well as all
the modern stuff, so he understands what it's like to be out of the mainstream. Very highly
    recommended.

<snip tale of miserable bike shop>

I used to reckon there's a special bike shop gene that makes you miserable. However recently I
haven't met it - all the people/shops I've dealt with recently have been good. (It helps that the
previous owner of Settle Cycles, my LBS, has retired and been replaced by a much friendlier set
    of people).

Currently the only people on my black list are SJSC for being too expensive and annoying, and Howes
in Cambridge for being miserable, although I would probably try them again except I don't live
    there any more.

    cheers, clive

  16. pauls bikes sounds fantastic- you could go in there, he'd bugger off being busy, while you half inch the nicest bike in the store (probably being able to change the pedals to your preferred ones aswell)- and then not feel guilty about it- i must admit im tempted😉

    Madgetts indeed are good too.

    Though where's Diss?

My favourite is the bike shop in Ilkley, even though its some ride for me to get there. I should
remember its name, but am unsure so won't risk putting something wrong here. Its under the arch up
the side street. They sell a lot of tandems.

Chevin Cycles in Otley is closer, and also very good, and I'd probably go between both of them if
looking for something. I've also been impressed by the mechanics at Stiff in Headingly (Leeds). The
other shop in Headingly, where I bought my hybrid, unfortunately closed a couple of years ago.

No recumbent specialist here though that I know of, apart from Rob and Carol towards Hull, and
apparently a mobility shop in York that sells Kettwiesel trikes for the disabled.

I worked in supermarkets for years, and it was always drummed into us that the customers paid our
wages and therefore we were to be nice to them (as inexpensively as possible, naturally :-)).

This idea seems to have bypassed some retailers altogether, unfortunately.

I'm getting worried about this pyromaniac tendency Dave seems to be developing, though....<backs

<snip tale of woe and indifference>

It's not just bike shops that hate cyclists. I had a run-in with the manager of my local branch of
    HSBC in Walthamstow yesterday.

I was cycling past and I realised that I needed to get a statement print. Travelling light without
locks I intended to wheel my bike (Ridgeback Genesis Day-00) into the cavernous lobby and print one
off. Think again - the front window of the bank is plastered with signs: "For the safety of all our
customers, bicycles are not permitted inside the branch".

Can I attract the attention of the two staff members hanging around just inside the lobby? Can I
heck! So I wheel my bike just inside the door which had the immediate desired effect. The manager
comes barrelling up and the conversation went along these lines. Please bear in mind that he was
shouting and agressive and I remained calm throughout.

Bank Manager: You can't bring this in here!
Me: Yes I know, I've seen the signs. BM: You have to take it outside now. You can't bring
    it in here!
Mf: Yes. I will, of course. Please could print me off a statement while I wait outside? BM: You can
    just leave it outside.
Mg: No I can't, I haven't brought a lock with me and it will get stolen as soon as I blink. Could
you please print me a statement and I will wait outside. BM: Our legal department have advised
us that we can't have bikes in the branch. If a child was to run over one[1] and have an
    accident...
Mh: [Thinks: "THINNNNNNK OF THE CHILLLLLLDRUUUHN"] But that's ridiculous. What about pushchairs?
They must cause as much obstruction as this bike does. If you put up sign saying 'no pushchairs'
there would be an uproar. BM: That's a completely different situation.
Mi: [I'm beginning to enjoy this now] I can't see how it's different. What about if I brough my
chello with me, or if I was going on holiday with mountains of luggage? What then? BM: We've had
    legal advice...
Mj: Yes, apparently so. Please could you print that statement for me now? BM: I'M NOT HERE TO RUN
AROUND AFTER THE LIKES OF YOU!
Mk: With respect, you're the branch manager. That's exactly what you're here for...

At this point a kind soul offered to watch my bike outside while she had a ciggy and I got my
    statement.

I rather feel I should write a letter not only complaining about his attitude, but pointing out that
shouting doesn't constitute exercise in itself and maybe he should get on a bike himself before his
threatened heart attack becomes a reality.
