Advice on Walking Clothing

An idea of where in Argentina/Chile would be a good idea, both are *big*
places. You would not need waterproofs in the Atacama Desert :-)

Yeh I've done that much planning!!! We will be in Torres del Paine in Chile
and various other parts of Patagonia so waterproofs and warmth will be quite
important! ;-)

Yeh I've done that much planning!!! We will be in Torres del Paine in Chile

It's worth a look at the Paramo stuff. It's considerably more
breathable than Goretex et al and is designed to be worn the whole time,
even when it isn't raining. The usual problem folk have with it is it
cooks you a bit, relying on a liner thermally quite similar to a very
light fleece, but if you want warmth from the jacket anyway that's
frankly a bit of a moot point. It's also a bit bilkier than trad
waterproofs, again because of the liner, but if you can wear it all day
then the packing isn't a problem and you can use fewer/cooler underlayers.

I've just bought a Mera Peak jacket - ticketed £199.95 from Field & Trek,
plus I got my 5% Gold Card discount. (If you wave a BMC card I believe they
give you 10% off.) I've been out in it a couple of times in wind and rain
and I love it: pockets where I like them, nice collar, decent hood.

Well that's my 2p worth!

Members of the uni mountaineering and hiking clubs both get 15% off. Given
the price of some of the kit in these places it might be worth bunging a
membership fee their way for the discount card. I'm guessing any other
organised group could get a similar discount (hey, how about the URW club?
:-) I /think/ the discount is with a particular store rather than the chain
tho.

They used to have a contracts price list for bulk mail order from clubs
and organisations. It has been a long time since I did that but they
might still do it...
