Well, they fooled me. I got sucked in, I admit, in a momentary lapse of reason I got tubeless wheels
and tires. I've had two sets of tires so far, a set of Specialized Mt. Baldy 2bliss 1.9's, and now a
set of Hutchinson Python 2.0's. These are my findings.
Pro : It is said that they are more resistant to pinch flats. This may be. I've only once suffered a
pinch flat.
Against :
They're bloody heavy. A Python weighs in at 730g, Which is more than the weight of an inner tube
over it's non-UST sibling. They're a [censored] to get on and off a rim. AND they specifically warn you
not to use tire levers. I wonder how I'm ever going to get them off the rim to fix on a ride. You
need a special kit to fix them. You need special wheels that are heavier than stardard wheels. I
couldn't get the Specialized's airtight. I had to pump them every two days. The Hutchinsons are OK.
There is a limited choice in threads and sizes. The pinch flat thing. If you would add the
difference in weight of a tubeless versus a tire-tube combination to the sidewalls of a normal tire,
ie. more rubber, I very much doubt if the advantage would still be there.
Of all the disadvantages it the difficulty of putting one on a rim, which is difficult to say the
least, and getting one off without tire levers, which IMHO is impossible, that leads me to determine
the only course of action is to stick with your regular setup. I know I will be returning to one
once the Hutchinsons wear out.
