I rode today

A new business is born! Rent a Wookie! Never get sand kicked in your
face again. Kinda like the trunk monkey, but guides the rides, and
when sh!t hits the fan, he's bigger and meaner, too! LOL!

As far as Mitch's dilemma goes, ride solo or ride with friends. Clubs
seem to get too many attitudes, no matter wh is in them or running
them. The bickering here between the advocacy groups and their
leadership (it's even in open forums, so you know it's bad) is enough
to make anyone with half of a brain stay away from their BS. That
said, yesterday, my friend and I cleared more than a couple of
"hanging" deadfalls off of the trail we rode.

Very true, JD. The past few months I have been on my own or with invited
people I get along with. The racer groups have their own clique and I've
never been part of that anyway.

I guess this is why I like traveling and riding with the folks on this
board from time to time. It's true no-holds-barred I just like to ride
fun.

Now, when is my next trip already?

Solo or with friends, the only way to travel. Otherwise, the risk of
riding with jerks, slowpokes, or obnoxious hammerheads increases
exponentially.

Despite the almost universal friendliness on the trails amongst riders,
there's a small group of high sport, lower expert racers around here
that are a pretty grim bunch, seen out on the trails riding hard,
trying to look cool by scowling and ignoring friendly greetings. Glad
I don't wake up to find I'm one of them, jimiminy christmas.

I'm definitely not seeking them out. When I started riding with them
over three years ago they seemed like a mellow just want to ride group.
Once I started getting a little better on the bike, getting attention
from my website, and being noticed for the advocacy I was helping with,
the leadership attitude changed drastically. Apparently, they want
you as long as you do the work and don't get noticed. Like I said, it's
an ego and control thing. When asked why the club wasn't organized and
had elected officers, the "buddy list owner" responded that the club was
his intellectual property. I think that about sums it up. I believe
this is more of a riding clique than a club. I think the IRS should
investigate what happens to the $20 each person gives for membership as
well as grant money received from the State and other incorporated
organizations such as IMBA. Something is rotten in Jersey and it ain't
the smells coming from the refineries.

Other than stormtroopers skidding and/or bombing while I'm climbing,
I've never had a 'problem' with other trail riders in NJ, NY, or
anywhere else. Sounds like a very weird scene down there.
However, off the bike, I do seem to get into some sort of moronic
confrontation every time I'm within 10 miles of Philly. Brotherly Love,
right?
My recommendation: bake the 'leader' a pie and hand it to him at the
start of the ride, earnestly thanking him for all that he does.
Embarrass him with good will. It'll [censored] him off to the point of
keeping him awake at night. He may never recover. If he doesn't take it
he has no class. If he takes it at some kind of face value as your
submission, tell your friends what a shmuck this guy is.
