They're used to mount derailure cable stops if you go to brifters.

TEN. I remember having to get 15 speeds out of a Schwinn Passage via
the 3x5 route. I RACED that heavy thing so many years ago. And, I took
it on 50-mile touring rides of Maine. Six was a bit "wowee" in 1986.

My Trek 1400, still 12 years old, has 2x8. When will it possibly end?
It just amazes me.... stuck in a time warp I guess

yes, Campagnolo and shimano.

My Gunnar has record timetrial barcon 10s on it. The shimano barcons
are the same, both mount on normal downtube braze-ons without the
barend section. They may require a tab washer under them to prevent
them from shifting into negtive cable tention, but will work without as
long as you do not shift past the smallest cog. A properly adjusted
der will not shift off the small, but some people just do not wish to
see their cable float in the wind.

I prefer downtube shifters. I grew up riding downtube shifters, it
seems more natrual to me.

The ergo and STI levers both come with a housing stop that mount very
cleanly on the dt braze-ons.

Campagnolo doesn't offer a DT shifter per se but the BarCon
set is the downtube shifter in a different mount. We (and
places where "C" is spoken) have the larger diameter stop
plates to mount them on standard DT bosses.
