Hi,
Does someone know how often I should apply wax? e.g. should it be after
every walk I do or can doing it too often damage the leather?
Thanks,
Mark

If we're talking Nikwax, rather than dubbin, then too much won't do any
harm (except to your pocket). I tend to wax leather boots when the
surface looks dry/scuffed/lighter (i.e. the wax actually makes a
difference - you can see where you've been). If they are already shiny,
and water droplets run off, then you're wasting your time adding more
wax on top, as far as I can see.

What harm does too much dubbin do?

I don't think it does any. In the days natural fibres were used it was
claimed in some quarters that dubbin rotted the stitching but none of
my boots fell apart at the seams but then perhaps I didn't use enough
dubbin. :-)

PS I don't think I have used dubbin at all in the last 25 or 30 years.
I used to use dubbin as a miracle cure for my dired out brown leather
football when I was a kid. It used to make all the difference when I
got hit full on in the face (in goal). Instead of being almost knocked
out by the equivalent of a rock, I was merely knocked senseless with a
huge slap and accompanying red mark from the heavy, but supple leather.
Not sure what relevance this has to the thread, but it brought back
memories for me.
Kids don't know they're born these days.
Come to think of it, even in driving rain I don't see kids wearing
jumpers or coats to school - what on earth do they use for goalposts?
Steve
They are not allowed to play football in school anymore. Two reasons, first
the little dears might scratch their knees, then mummy would bring a
compensation claim (if only for having to have the Chelsea tractor cleaned);
secondly if you have a match there must be winners and losers, and if the
little potential ASBOs are on the losing side think what that will do to
their future development.
And as for playing conkers!!! You can go to jail for just suggesting it.

True and sad.
We berrate kids these days for being couch potatoes, but how can they
enjoy the outdoors when faced with the Nanny State and predatory
paedophiles?

Beacons armed with a couple of HP sauce butties and either a bow and
arrow or a penknife tied to a stick to hunt my own game (never got
anywhere near, but didn't stop me trying). I wouldn't see a soul all
day - brilliant!
Kids these days don't know what they're missing, but its not always
their fault.

I've been using dubbin since I bought my new boots a couple of months
ago and I've just bought a new tin. I too remember leather footballs
and boots and expected to be greeted by a familiar smell when I opened
the tin.
It was almost a disappointment to me to notice that this product (Carr &
Day & Martin Dales Dubbin) has a fainter odour than a normal tin of shoe
polish.
But it works a treat. However muddy my boots are, I can rinse them off
when I get home, wipe them with a cloth and put them back on to go to
the pub. For 89p a tin, I call that a good deal.

Typical! I have two sons at different (state) schools. They both do
football, rugby, basketball, athletics in a competitive manner and get
prizes (occasionally!) for doing well. One plays for a local football team
and the other a local rugby team. They are able to do this because parents
and others volunteer to run these clubs and fundraise for them and do so,
rather than whining on on newsgroups about the "nanny" state - a sure sign
(the whiners) probably don't have kids! Eldest (15) recently received injury
to kidney at rugby necessitating hospital visit - no we didn't put in a
claim for compensation, youngest (12) staggered out onto freezing foorball
pitch yeaterday full of cold so as not to let team down and managed to score
a goal. Neither are brilliant but they don't mind playing competitively and
have buckets of team spirit.;o)
