  1. hello all,

God this feels realy weird like having to talk to an assembly full of people when you were a kid at
school! Anyway this newsgroup thing is all very new to me so I apologise if i get things wrong,
spelling mistakes and all that. You see I am doing a computor course and part of it requires me to
join a newsgroup and since i have just started running i thought this one would be the best.

Anyway sorry to waffle on, to the point i think. OK so i have just bought what i think is a super
dooper running machine and have been running on it for about 3 weeks. At the moment i am doing
20mins on it, 5 warm up, 5 running, 5 fast walking, 5 running and then 5 cooldown. Now does that
sound about right? I am slim but not very fit so what do you guys suggest I do???? Any advice would
    be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Welcome! This is a good group actually. You could have joined other groups that were far worse in
terms of having a bunch of [censored].

    hello all,

Good evening, Victoria. You must try and be less 'chummy'. We run a tight, formal, ship on
    rec.running.

For God's sake girl, stand up straight and don't mumble. And WHAT, pray, are your hands doing in
    your pockets?

We're under strict instruction from Schoolmistress Freeze not to mention poor spelling or
grammer, which is just as well 'cause I note you're having trouble with the word "computer" in
    your next sentence.

Oh please, don't stop. The ability to waffle is at the very core of being a true rec.runner.

NO. Sell it on ebay - thus gaining extra credits on your computer course - and get out into the real
world. Running outside is much more FUN!

At last! A running babe to rival Mary049. Thank you, gentle Jesus, thank you.

No. Tempting though it is, I'll leave this to 'theBillRodgers'.

You never, NEVER, need to ask for advice. You'll get it anyway.

Put the machine in the corner, and go outside and run.

Well, Vicky, that depends on what your goals are. Are you looking just to get a little more fit? Do
you have health issues? Would you like to get to where you can cover some distance? Are you
interested in speed? Do you ever want to race (don't say no yet!)? Have you ever been in good shape?
    If so, how long ago?

You tell us what you want out of running, and there will be no end to the advice you will receive.
So tell us. Why do you want to run?

Ahh once a few of the newgroup wiseasses (aka trolls) respond you'll feel just like you're back in
grade school. But rest assured that this group also has many knowledgable and experienced runners to
give you their opinions. Runners have lots of opinions and they are always willing to share.

You're well on the right track. There are those who take months to be able to run more than 5
    minutes in one shot.

The beginners mantra goes like this "run until you need to walk, walk until you can run again."

Gradually increase the length of the running periods. In order to maintain fittness it is
recommended that we exercise 20 to 30 minutes 3 to 5 times per week. Once you've got that far you
can decide how much more you want to make of your running. You could race if you like.

One thing you probably should know about running shoes. They wear out after perhaps 400-600 miles.
Invest in a good pair of running shoes they are well worth the $80 or so investment. Running in
cross trainers are ok for the running you are doing now. But as you advance you'll really need a
    pair of running shoes.

  7. 1) Welcome
    2) You will probably have to wade through a lot of jerks. Figure out how to use Blocker Sender or
killfile or whatever method to block messages from senders whose messages you do not like.

    3) As for the post, what are your goals? "Vicky Pearce" <[email hidden]> wrote in

    Welcome to the group, Vicky!

Andy gave you some of the best advice so far. The only suggestion I would add is to begin a running
log. Just get a small notebook and record basic information, date, time spent running, feelings
about the run (hard, easy, fun, improved).

From the details you will see how much you improve, especially at the beginning. Then on days when
you don't feel quite motivated to run, you can review the log and get some perspective on either
why you should run (such as reading an entry that describes a similar day but included a great
run) or why you shouldn't run (such as noticing you increased your mileage a lot that week).

Finally, you can get more information from reading the FAQ. Ozzie Gontang, a regular poster in this
group, maintains it. It contains a lot of facts and opinions about running. So between the group and
the FAQ, youshould be starting a nice long running career.

    Enjoy the run!
