Some of you may have seen the recent thread "Heart rate weirdness" where = the topic of max HRs and
whether they vary with training came up. For me = I have noticed my max HR goes down when I'm fit.
I asked Glen Grant = about this. As a former sub 4 miler and experienced coach I am inclined = to
take note.=20
He says:
This is actually less complex than it seems. The heart searches for = output=20 at the optimum pulse
(o2 requirement) for the effort required. The max = pulse=20 is probably 210+ but your fitness does
not allow you togo there. The fitter you are, the better the aerobic system works delivering more=20
output lower down. The better also is the ability to clear lactate so = the=20 pulse does not rise
so much in compensation for the ability to deal with =
acid. As you get fitter you use less of the anaerobic system overall- or = you=20 can use it better
for longer under pressure. Hope this makes sense Glen
As a corollary to this you can see why training at sub maximal levels =
(e.g. those long aerobic runs) at least some of the time is so = important. If you have no base
endurance, the body needs to work harder = and harder to keep going so your pulse rises right
up, the lactic rises = right up and consequently you don't run very fast. OK this is rather a
= simplistic view but makes sense to me.
