Upgrading my OLD Bike - What do I need?

    Well, I got some 105 shifters/brake levers, the new "combo" kind. -It's funny, I say "new" but I'm sure they're 10 years old now... However, i just started biking and I've had the old shifters on the downtubes - so they're new to me!!!

    Okay, so far I've bought 1) the new 9-speed shifters/brake levers (with cables & housing), 2) new wheels, 3) new 9-speed rear cassette, 4) new chain, 5) new front rings - Honestly, I think that's it...

    Well, we get the stuff home, and realize that the old brake and shifter cables run through little "hoops" on the side of the frame. So there's the problem. Newer bikes come with the integrated cable stops, right? Mine doesn't have those!! I honestly think I need them.

    So I need your help. I need some bolt on cable stops. Or are they called cable guides? Or cable stays?

    Anyway, I've searched high and wide and found practically nothing. CAN YOU HELP???

    I can't think of any reason why new cables can't be routed in exactly the same way the old ones were.

    Yes, you can buy them from Shimano, they bolt on where the old down tube shifters went, any LBS can show you, in the back of the Shimano catalogue, page 235. SM-ST74 or SM-CS50.

    Hmm, the shimano site is coming up with nothing on those part numbers...

    The new "brifters" came with a NICE cable setup that I would like to utilize. I'm sure I could get some longer lines to route all the way, but I'd rather explore this option before I have to do that.

    If your bike is old enough that it doesn't have downtube braze-ons to attach the cable stops to, you can get an aftermarket bolt-on stop. Your LBS can get them, but see these links for an idea of what you are looking for.

    Yeah it looks like those will work. I'll bet you didn't have cable housing from your old downtube shifters all the way to the derailleurs though.

    Brake cable housings frequently go all the way from levers to calipers, but derailleur cables were always bare downstream of the shifters except for some little bits nearer the derailleurs.
