Cycling Sunnies!

I had bloke come into our optometry practice with a pair of Rudy projects with a small clip on which was placed on the inside of the sun glasses where he inserted prescription lenses, he was complaining of a 'Fishbowl' effect when he looked through them, after a few experiments we came to the conclusion it was the curvature of the clip on which held the lenses which caused the effect? Any other riders have the same problem?

I had a similar problem with my Bolles. I think the issue is having two lenses of different curvature. My eyes adjusted to it after a few wearings and now I can go back and forth with my regular glasses and not notice a difference.

That is why my optomitrist advisted me to go with prescription sunglasses rather than the inserts. She also told me that I would not be pleased with anything more curved than the Oakley Square Wires. It all depends on what the correction is. At -4.75 diopters and severe astigmatism, the inserts and curved lenses are not going to work.

I wear any sunnies which fit as long as they are UV approved to Oz standards. Which always appear to be polaroid lenses.

Only problem I have is I can not see my echowell computer. The screen has blacked out parts when I have these sunnies on. If I put on non UV approved type no probs. The irony is my old cateye computer did not suffer this blanking out problem.
Is this situation common?

It happens with polarized lenses becuase the display on the computer is polarized. If you take any two pair of polarized sunglasses, and hold one lens perpendicular to the other, you will not be able to see through the two lenses. Rotate one of the lenses, and you will be able to see through both lenses. The same is true with the face of your computer. Hold the sunglasses in front of your face, look through the lens and rotate the lens. There will be a position where you could see the display and a position where you could not.

The cateye computer was probably in a plane that worked with the sunglasses, and the echowell is not. It seems to me that the computer manufacturers would have been smart enough to figure out that this would be a problem, but apparently, not all of them have.

If what you say is true, the cateye mob are at least 18 years ahead of echowell, as I bought the CE in Hawaii in 1988 (although not used till I began riding 3 years ago after a 30 year break ) & the EW in Dec 05.

I got Oakley XX frames in my prescription with the polarized lenses. These are made of their "O-Matter" (plastic) and are lighter than the M-Jackets. They keep the wind and bugs out of my eyes. I didn't want to fool with inserts. Plus, I had a credit at my optometrist and they carried Oakleys.

Just a word of advice stay clear of the cheap imitation sunglasses you may buy at the markets as most of these sunglasses do not pass Australian standards. When you buy a pair of sunglasses which pass australian standards it not only has to comply to UV requirements (which are now categorized into categories 1,2,3, 3 being the best) but also to impact resistance, this is to protect you from any foreign projectiles.

Polaroid lenses usually pass Australian standards because the lenses are too expensive for cheap imitations to make copies of them, however polaroid lenses do not give you more protection from uv, they reduce glare off reflected surfaces for e.g. light reflected off water.
