Yep, my usual experience at Kew is.
Work hard to get near the front before the hairpin, get spat out the
back up the hill. Work bloody hard down the hill to catch up and get
near the front before the hairpin, and get spat out the back up the
hill. Work like a maniac down the hill to get near the front before the
hairpin, get spat out the back, perform ITT for the next 20 mins.

Your bike is an OCR, isn't it?

Is it properly fit for you? Or are you losing the bunch in the sprint
up the hill, rather than e.g. badly taking the corner itself?

Come on Tim, you've seen the way I climb 🙁 . The bike and setup is
fine, the engine is the problem.

Need more muffins then, clearly 🙂

Reducing (definitely not increasing) muffin intake, plus snot block,
chips and chocolate reductions (yeah as if choc reduction will happen
this weekend), are all fundamental requirements to my returning to the
fray and once again donating $10 each week to someone more deserving.
Actually I'm now the lightest I've been for 10 years but some more
reduction required (need to go on the patented Lama diet).

As others have pointed out Heffron can be a challenging circuit. Try to hold
your lines and speed through the corners. This will come as you become more
confident. Just remember "Maroubra" is aboriginal for place of winds. Winds
are mainly nor easter in summer (in your face over the "pimples"= tough) or
south westers in winter, as it has been the last couple of weeks (head wind
    in the straight)

Aha. I didn't know that was the meaning of Maroubra.

If you need help/advice i am the big red headed bloke with the brown border
collie. I am also on the commitee of the club.

Thanks. It would be good to do some of the weekly training rides with
the club. What is the average speed on those rides? It won't be much fun
for me if most of the people in the group are A and B graders.

Against my better judgement, I did the ride out to Waterfall with some
club members today. I got dropped on Southern Cross Drive somewhere
after the airport. The group was doing speeds in excess of 40km/h along
Southern Cross Drive. Way higher than my usual speed.

I was lucky a friend in the group dropped back and we ended up doing the
    ride as a pair.

It was the longest and hardest ride I have done so far. We ended up
riding to Bulli and catching the train back to Central.

So I take it other crit circuits do not have that many corners?

Nah, its just that Heffron esp the "squircle" right angles up near the
tennis courts were designed for parking tanks in WW2 rather than looking
after roadies in a crit circa 2000+.

Serious? So Heffron Park used to be a military facility?

....and after the war a migrant hostel /displaced persons camp, with lots of
glamorous sheds with asbestos cement sheeting (try and resist the temptation
    to do any archeology).

Could be wrong about year, but I think Randwick-Botany had a fatality in a
race on Anzac Parade and they then moved their racing to Heffron in about
1979, by adopting the simple expedient of pushing over a few inconvenient
    fences.

Whilst its all official now, I suspect some of the concrete road surface
    will be the original.

    best, Andrew
