  1. hi ,
I was up there Sunday morning and there were a couple of yobs on
motorbikes. No number plates. Is there some way of reporting this ?

    thanks,

I doubt it, unless you have a very detailed description of the bikes
and their riders and could swear to be able to identify them in court.

You could report the sighting to the Snowdonia NP Rangers, if there
is such a service, but they'll probably say that they know that it
happens but there is nothing that they can do unless the police get
    involved.

Waun Fach is in the Black Mountains in the Eastern Beacons so the
Snowdonia NP rangers aren't going to be interested.

I think it is a well known problem. There is a road used as a public
path [1] from Grwyne Fawr over Y Das to Rhos Fach that his
theoretically subject to a TRO banning motor vehicles.

Some years ago I was chatting to a park ranger I'd met on Cribyn, when a
group of trail bikers came along. He attempted to chase them and tell
them off, but didn't have any success.

A few years later, I came across a couple of trail bikers between two
paved bits of the Offa's Dyke path near Hay Bluff. They had their rear
wheels stuck in a peat bog and were creating huge ruts. I commented
that they weren't supposed to be there, and the response was "but we
live here". It obviously didn't occur to them that this was (a)
irrelevant and (b) untrue since there were no houses within several
    miles.

    Hi Tim,

I believe the police actually have riders posing as trail riders out on
the hills with the sole purpose of catching the wrongdoers. Nice work
if you can get it :-)

Bikes that aren't licenced for road use don't need number plates...

How do they get from home to off road without using roads?

Unregulated off-roading ruins the countryside as you well know - look at
the Bwlch just up the road from you.

  10. "How do they get from home to off road without using roads?"

    By trailer! How else;-)

    JS

  11. The answer ought to be that they are given somewhere to indulge their
sport. I find them highly irritating - the noise, the damage to the
turf, the threat of being knocked over etc. On the other hand - each to
    their own.

The authorities near Keighley seem to have the right idea - see quarry
near Cullingworth at SE 05682 35772*. Very popular - especially at
weekends - and the rest of us - walkers, horse riders, picnickers, day
trippers and lover's lane inhabitants - know best to just keep away.

    * Actually, until I checked the OS Explorer** map in Memory Map I hadn't
realised that it was designated officially - I just thought the old
quarry was used as custom and practice.

** Thanks to the BitTorrent community.

I know. I find myself at odds with my own opinions with things like
this, to be honest, because whilst I agree with everything you and
others say about motorised wotnots on the hills, I'd love to have an
off-road something or other (maybe a quad 'cos there's less chance of
falling off than with a bike) to play with.

Exactly. There's a 'hill' down the road from me that I strongly suspect
is mainly [censored] heap on top of a much smaller hill. No one in their
right mind (or no mind at all) would ever bother to walk on it,
    especially since it's on a direct route to the local landfill site;
however there is a large sign telling the world that bikes etc are
verboten thereon. For pity's sake, *why*? Naturally, the local yoof
ignore said sign, and the signs of scrambling and quadding (what a
lovely verb) are rife; however for the life of me I can't see what
damage such people are likely to do to anything other than themselves.
And of course if they damage themselves then that's their problem, and
one they'll probably accept. This particular hill isn't used for
anything other than for the local yoof to set fire to, so why ban the
use of bikes and suchlike? It's not even likely to upset local
residents, since there is a mainish road 'twixt the only row of affected
houses (about half a dozen in a terrace) and said hill...

Riders of bikes that aren't licenced for road use are only allowed to
ride on land if they have permission from the land owner.

Our Local Authority are proposing an Off Road biking area and the locals
have a petition on the go opposing it. I thought - why oppose this, it
is somewhere for the yobs or other off roaders to vent their feelings
without tearing up the countryside. They probably would any way. Now I
hear that participants in this new venture will not be able to use their
own bikes, but will have to hire bikes and pay for the privilege.

I can't see that going down at all!

And of course, since everywhere is owned by someone, we don't know that
    they didn't.

Because they can. Let's face it, some people will oppose anything and
    everything.

Exactly. May as well give them somewhere they can use legally.

Neither can I. If I owned my own off road vehicle, regardless of the
number of wheels, I wouldn't want to pay to hire someone else's. I'd
just go and use my own somewhere that wasn't regulated - and I suspect
so will the off roaders of your area.

As was pointed out to me confirming my opinion - the ones that would use
the facility might equally use the open countryside as well having
become bored with driving round in circles.
