Sounds like i might be off topic but. Walking guides and books often give instructions something like "leave car park or lay by" (situated at grid ref for example 731 571 -OL17) and turn right etc. This is not much use if you have got the wrong start location when beginning your walk.
Therefore does any one know of a make of car navigation GPS that accepts grid references that could navigate you to a car park or lay by, this would make life alot easier when attempting walks in an unfamiliar part of the country.
I have tested a Tom Tom 300 owned by a friend, so I know this piece of kit does not do what i require.
Does such a gadget exist?
At present i confirm that i am at the correct location when i have parked up, got out the vehicle switched on my Garmin Etrex to find out if i am where i think i should be.
I have just bought a Streetpilot i3 and wanted to do this. I thought i would give Memory Map a try as I already use it with my Foretrex. I plugged the i3 in to my pc and downloaded marks from MM to the i3 straight away no problems.

It is always a good idea to check the settings on a GPS before using it in anger. Garmins will work on too many standards. Go to a specific cross roads which you know the Grid reference and see if the GPS agrees with the map, preferably OS Explorer. -- Dave Fawthrop <dave hyphenologist co uk> Google Groups is IME the *worst* method of accessing usenet. You could create a waypoint in your Etrex for the grid ref you're aiming for and navigate to it. It will show you how near you are as you approach and when you pass it! Get a windscreen phone mount from Halfords.

Why not just switch the Etrex on before you get there?

They don't mark every layby and squeeze-in-by-that-telegraph-post on the map. Also some roads require a little more attention be paid to the driving than the map. Micro navigation is easier the slower you go. I have frequently used a variation on aiming off to find a parking space -- go past it and come back. Hi Roy, yes i do go into the hills armed with a os map, compass , mm printed out maps , map case, walking guides ,GPS ,first aid kit etc ,etc, etc, and all the other of the paraphernalia that is reqiuired.
Aahharr BATTERY LIFE. Mind you i could get an in car charger ,could be worth thinking about.

That's not the problem with the i3 - it does not have fields to accept grid references in the "places" input dialogs. You can use Mapsource as well as other PC based software to download waypoints that you can set in GR format, but AFAIK there is no way to do that in the field with an i3.

I use a Garmin Quest in-car and you can create waypoints by their grid referencs in two ways that I know of:-
1) Create a waypoint, any waypoint, then edit the GR to the one you want to go to, or
2) Use the cursor to zoom in on the map on the GR you want to go to, then waymark it
