One of my favourite works is Handel's Messiah and one
of the first arias in the work is "Every valley" a fine aria
which I jokngly refer to as the 'road menders song'. It
reminds me of red oil lamps, steam rollers, men with
picks and shovels leaning on them, tar boilers, piles of
tarmac being tipped out of lorries and spread on the road
all the pungent smells and nightwatchmen with their coke
braziers sometimes with a policeman warming his hands.
All gone now to be replaced by newfangled machinery :-)
