Jay, I don't have AOL - my son does. You couldn't pay me to switch. He has
had it for years, from the time his kids were pre-teens. I suppose that's
why he subscribed but why he still keeps it is beyond me.

To Doug and Reg - thanks for the advice. I do have Winzip and will try
doing it that way. That sounds as though it will work.

<laugh>... sorry I don't read well.. no aol ..good for you..

My son has AOL. Whenever we try to send a group of photos to him, he
tells us he only gets one and we must be doing something wrong.
However, the photos are cc'd to others at the same time and they have no
    problems.

Is this something to do with AOL? Do they block things?

Hello Dora..AOL is not good. If you can and when you can dump 'em. You
don't really need their cutesy little environment or sorry service. I a
betting you can find a better deal also.

AOL zips and unzips automatically, with AOL you no longer need to
purchase WinZip... if your son is sending you groups of pictures with
AOL they will definitely be zipped.
What're the extentions on the pictures you send... old extensions like
..tar and .mime, etc. are no longer supported by most ISPs, nor are they
    supported by newer PCs.

Tell your son to send the pictures embeded in email, I think AOL allows
up to 15 pictures now, I bet you'll see them. Then if desired you can
copy and paste the pics wherever. If you're sending your son groups of
pics as an unzipped file AOL won't open it. Get WinZip or send him
    pics one at a time.

There's nothing wrong with AOL, anyone claiming to have problems simply
doesn't know how to use a PC. I've been using AOL since it was born,
    I've never experienced
any of the problems people claim AOL has... people who don't use AOL
and [censored] about it are simply suffering from CCBD and sour grapes.
    (Chronic Cheap [censored] Disease)

There are many here who don't have their own ISP or their own PC, they
access the net by stealling services from their employer, many of those
thieves are who [censored] about AOL. Fortunately these days most large
    companys block usenet.

Your son stays with AOL because he knows AOL is the best, by far the
best... especially since he has kids.

All [censored]. AOL is to the internet as fruit roll-ups are to food. Intended
    for the stupidest of children.

    Here's confirmation of your problem.

    And here's the solution:

My guess is that a die-hard AOL user will *not* use anything but
the AOL mailer, though. If they don't want to use real software,
    then that's their tough luck.

I wonder how many AOL'ers use Thunderbird or OE to read mail?
    1%? 2% tops.

ISPs don't need to know about or support *anything* since all they are
doing is providing a transport mechanism to move bytes from one place to
another. It is up to whatever software is running on the client machines
    to manipulate the data.

aol has an overdone proprietary toy interface designed to communicate
    with other aol users.

I'm sorry, but there are a few erroneous conclusions here. If a sender's
email contains various levels of attachments, it will appear that way
regardless of how you receive it. Saying that one mail app or another
doesn't have a problem is false unless you've actually used the same message

While a couple of others castigated AOL, they couldn't provide reasons why, so I
deleted those posts before replying to another, hence the weighted perspective
    on my part.

That said, my understanding is that OE handles MIME encoding/decoding
differently, which very likely accounts for the difficulty sending/receiving
attachments to/from AOL. There are numerous programs which do not have this
    issue.

You haven't read very thoroughly. It was pointed out pretty clearly
that AOL's limitations on the number of attachments is less than
acceptable. Real ISPs don't do that.

Why anyone would subject themselves to it is a mystery
    to me.

PS - Having a husband who's an engineer isn't much of
a qualification. I wouldn't bother putting it on my

Sounds like it's a combination of shared faults which combine to cause a
    train wreck:

Nested messages (*.EML files) is a common problem when messages come
from AOL, WebTV or Netscape. Some mail programs, such as AOL, always do
a Forward as Attachment. Netscape does this by default, but the sender
can do a "Forward Quoted" instead to avoid the problem.

Often the attachment includes "Content-Disposition: inline". Some mail
programs honor this. Unfortunately OE doesn't. With the exception of
images (which is controlled by Tools, Options, Read in OE4 or a registry
setting in OE5), OE will not display attachments Inline. Instead you
have to open each attachment. If a message has been forward 10 times
you need to go down 10 levels of opening attachments.

If they are simple text messages, a quick workaround is to look at the
    Message Source (Ctrl-F3).

I pointed out exactly why a couple days ago and provided

Which you didn't mention. You just wanted to bash "Outhouse"
(unsubstantiated) the same way we bashed AOL (substantiated).

Regardless, your statement "I've noticed everyone in this thread
who has complained about AOL attachments is using Outhouse
Express" is not correct. And your understanding of how OE
packages attachments is incorrect. There is a known problem
displaying MIME attachments, but not sending them.
