I honestly have no idea which bike to go for in this situation.π I'm a roadie who also participates in a lot of various triathlons around the area, looking for a new bike in the $2000 range. I was originally looking at the Cervelo Soloist 105 as an option for both (reversible seatpost), however my LBS told me that it was [censored] and a really harsh ride. They advised me on the Cannondale Caad 7 R1000. I hear that the Caad 7 frame is harsh too but bearable wth a good carbon seatpost. I'm not sure if just slapping on aerobars would be smart though because of the road geometry. The new 2004 Trek 2200 looks good too with the new ZR-9000 alloy and carbon seatstay. Are there any other bikes out there that you would suggest?

To be quite honest...both bikes suck. If you're looking for a good Triathlon bike...go FELT! Felt F45 or 65 should serve you well. This is the best advice I can give you.

thnx, I'll be checking those out. I dont think there's a F65 though..... Any more advice would be extremely helpful.
I disagree about the comment that both bikes suck. Obviously there is no such thing as a single bike that is perfect for both road racing and time trialling. But for a compromise, I think the Soloist is as good as you will get. And Tyler Hamilton won Liege-Baston-Liege on one.

I've ridden both of them. They are extremely uncomfortable and hard on the body. I only say this because I have been on both bikes and didn't like it. I can only endorse Felt because this is what I currently TT on and it rocks! Sorry if I offended you, but I speak from actual experience.

Thats what I was thinking. My LBS is very friendly however and might let me ride one around for an hour or so. I'm riding an old and extremely harsh '88 aluminum Guerciotti right now so I could say I'm familiar with uncomfortable rides.π I don't know how the cervelo and cannondale compare to that. I've never ridden a felt though so I think I might try the f45 as well. I think I'm somewhat learning towards the Soloist, but any more opinions would be great.
[I'm not sure about all the talk of harsh rides on Cannondales. I love my 1985 R900 frame outfitted with C-Record/Record. I'm in the process of updating with a new frame and Record Group but would love to try a CAAD7 but no one around here has one in stock. I have a steel(Reynolds 531) bike with NR/SR and I find it too flexible for me to climb(I weigh 200lbs). When I first got the R900 the first thing I remember is how the front der. didn't rub when I got out of the saddle.

while felt bikes are known to be pretty good bikes, don't go knocking another bike like the cervelo soloist bike until you've ridden one. i've personally never ridden one, but if tyler hamilton can ride one in the tour and finish in the top, i'm sure it doesn't suck....

You definitely didn't offend me. However, given the choice of believing your recommendation or that of Tyler Hamilton and the rest of the CSC team, I know who I'd go with.
Also, the Soloist gets very good reviews on www.roadbikereview.com
I did try the 2002 model and thought it a great bike. Maybe you didn't try one in the right size.

Guys...I'm a Cat 1 racer that has ridden over 23 frames in my career. I know what I'm talking about. These bikes were all handed over to me by team managers with everything fitted perfectly. The bikes just didn't suite my riding style or form. I have met Tyler Hamilton personally at Carmichael's Training Camp. Do you know how little he is? He's like 5'5 and 125lbs. He could fit on a Cervelo with no problem. I'm 6'0 and 195lbs. The frames didn't work for me. So for me...they suck. End of story. So all you posers out there who have nerver taken a podium in your life should just learn to take the opinion of those much more experienced in this game. Depending on your riding style and form...these frames or any other frame for that matter may not ever be the best for you. In order to get the right bike, you have to test, test, and test some more until you get it right. For me, Felt answered the call. This what I TT on and have taken the podium every event since racing this particular set-up. Good luck on the search. The right frame will come along and when it does, you'll know you were meant to race it.
Several points: Firstly, just because the bike doesn't suit you, doesn't mean that the bike "sucks". Secondly, "isdsms" asked about a bike for both road and TT. I think most would agree that the Soloist fits this bill better than a Felt. Thirdly, try to relax. There is no need to get defensive when someone has an opinion different to yours even if you are such a racing legend as you say. You are not the only person ever to grace a podium or to ride many different bikes.

that's a really good attitude to use to push people away from the sport of cycling. i don't care if you're a cat 1 racer or lance armstrong....pushing your opinion on someone like that is uncalled for. he originally asked opinions on the two bikes that he was looking at. it's cool if you want to recommend a different bike, but don't go flying off like a jerk and saying that all bikes suck except yours. and just because you've ridden 23 different frames doesn't give you the right to think you know it all and call everyone else posers. he eventually has to find out what works for him on his own...not by your forceful opinion. if i was him, i would consider not riding a felt just because of the attitude you have towards everyone else...

See...its a [censored]...poser like you that taint the sport. Get a life.

ride on!
Thanks Bro. I agree 100%. We should be helping each other to further the sport. Again, sorry for being such a pop-off. =(
Ok, I think i'll take your advice and just test ride frames and see which one works best for me. I'm 5'5" and 140 lbs by the way. But I was wondering... why in the poll do I have 5 out of 8 people saying i should go with the cannondale? Speak up! lol
