Respraying my bike

Every part on a bike is held by bolts and screws.

Err, yeah I know that!

The coil has a central piston and I assume it will expand to the maximum
when removed from the bike (as far as the piston will allow), if that is the
case, how hard would it be to put the coil back on and does it need to be
compressed to do so?

Clue: It's already at max extension when bolted in place in the frame
without you on the seat.

Don't take that assembly apart. Just undo the bolts that the ends of
the spring/shock assembly pivot on, and you'll have no problem. The
suspension does not have a travel limiter other than the shock
assembly itself, so as long as you don't take the shock apart, you
won't have to deal with the spring. If, on the other hand, you
unscrew the collar that the spring seats against, you will most likely
discover that when you reach the last couple of threads of the
process, the spring will be under zero tension. Unless you intend to
paint the spring (which I don't recommend; the coating on there needs
to be better stuff than you're going to apply) or replace it, there is
no reason to take the shock assembly apart when painting the bike.
