Am I miss reading this, let me know, because I thought he was up for a lead position in this years tour, the crissoned "next lance". Dont get me wrong I want george to get the chance to ride this, but I thought Danielson would be support, but I guess not.
I was not aware he would not be doing the TdF, but he was never, ever, ever considered to be the captain for the Tour.
And neither is Mr. Hincapie. It would appear that they are supporting Popo with Savoldelli as backup (or was it the other way around).
It was speculated earlier this month that the team leader would be Hincapie, but with Savoldelli riding the way he is and Popo in the position he is in you are probly right.

Danielson has been much hyped but not yet done much. And at 28, he's not so young. Definitely not "the next Lance." Furthermore, he had a lousy day at the Giro today. He may yet be a decent Tour rider, but I can't imagine he has a realistic chance at the podium in any year.

Discovery doesn't really have anyone that can podium pending a giant leap forward with Pop. They now say Danielson is sick. I also think that Danielson is getting too old to be considered an up and comer. I heard that Danielson might do the 2007 Tour.

I love Hincapie. He has been a backbone for the team. But anybody who thinks that George can be a GC contender needs to cut down on his pot intake.

Danielson might have been one of many such talented men that joined Ullrich, knowing almost certainly they’d be brought back. But I hope that it shows the American is over the cold that hit him three days ago, and that also the team have given him a degree of freedom to enjoy in what is left of this race.
For sure, the next two days will test Danielson to the limits, but it might be the making of the man if he overcomes his cold and manages to play a bigger role in his team’s attempts to wring some satisfaction out of the Giro - Graham

Discovery are letting the speculation build up because it helps confuse other teams as to who the disco leader is, id say savoldelli is leader with hincapie and popovych as backup if the opportunity arises.

Forgive me for I'm definately not an expert by any means on the subject of bike racing though I do enjoy following, but what I did catch over the past few weeks was hype over Tom Danielson. I am confused why it was not made clear he would not be considered for the tdf, I know it was explained above but I'm curious as to why exactly. So if anyone would like to explain to a newbie why this is I would appreciate it. And also what is his next move now that discovery channel has announced the team and that is their obvious focus; and lastly couldn't he have played a good role as a support rider to gain experience for when he would really make a run at the tour? -- thanks, just a beginner

Tom Danielson is going to try and win the Vuelta Espana. It is impossible for a G.C rider to be on top form for all the Grand Tours during the year, so he is saving himself for the Vuelta where he finished in the top ten last year.

I hope he does well, being our hometown boy and all. But he seems to run into sickness every time out. Knee at last years Giro, sick in the mountains at last years Vuelta, sick in the mountains at this years Giro. I just want to see him do one healthy solid grand tour, and see what he's got.
