On my day off today I decided to investigate why I had a "klunk" noise in my drivetrain. I had this noise before on another set of pedals so I thought this might be where my problem was. I took the pedals off the crank arms dis-assembled them, the in-board loose ball bearings had a significant amount of "debris" in them and the outer bearings seemed clean, just a bit of that yellow-brown stuff they put on them at the factory. Cleaned them all off and re-assembled them. Seems to have solved the problem.
So the question: Why don't they assemble with some form of grease? Or do they and I just missed it?

They did. It's that yellow-brown stuff you saw.
You did the right thing. Many components come with insufficient grease and improperly adjusted bearings.

Wow, I thought that was more of a protectant put on there to protect against rust and corrosion than a lubricant.
