  1. ....a ride that started out rocky (really heavy traffic on Big Timber Rd
this morning that made a multiple lane change for a left turn most
heart-pounding) got much better at the very end.

About 2 blocks from our house is this adorable little boy, probably no
older than 5 or 6, who already rides like a champ. He has a little BMX-
style bike, with F-A-T tires, and he tears around on this thing. This
morning, I came back as kids were waiting for the bus. His mom must let
him take the bike everywhere, because she was standing on the corner
watching for the bus while he was tearing up and down the sidewalk. As
he came towards me (I in the street, he approaching me on the sidewalk
to my right), I was greeted with a glorious "ching-ching, ching-ching"
    from his old-school bell.

I responded with my brass bell, then returned home just a bit happier.

Yeah, what's with those F-A-T tires? I've been seeing that a lot. Is it
just for show? They must weigh a ton!

    Nice story. Thanks.

Ah to be a kid again! Sometimes I remember what it was like just to tear
through the neighborhood on whatever I had at the time. And makes me
wish I was a kid again.

The problem here is that there's a commuter rail station to my right
(heading eastbound), and I need to turn left; guess where most of the
motor vehicle traffic is heading. Oh, and the rest of the traffic is
racing to bypass the Elgin toll plaza on I-90 (NW Tollway), so they're
all screaming by at 45-55mph in that left lane.

You'd think so, but this bike is darned small, so it might not be that
bad. I'm still surprised by how short this thing is.

  5. I'm always encouraged when i see kids on their bmx bikes or whatever...
sometimes i see kids on road bikes out with their parents (usually a dad
who is also a roadie). I figure at least they aren't sitting at home
watching tv or playing video games and stuffing their faces!

I'm always encouraged when I see you posting. Having nice people on the
group somewhat outweighs those less than nice.

It is also nice to see one grounded in reality who knows the value of
outside time for kids. Video games really are a blight, as is cable. It
was nice growing up in the 50's with only 3 networks and a local PBS
channel, all in glorious Black & White. With nothing on television we
kids were outside until the sun went down every day. And to top it off
we had to get up off the couch to change the channel or wiggle the
    rabbit ears, whew.

  8. I have a bell on my MTB. Just a simple "Ting" type, I use it on the
blind spots of trails that are shared by hikers and equestrian-types.

Last weekend I passed a couple of the latter (from behind) with a
friendly warning, and along with the thanks, I get a return "ting" from
one of the horse-ladies who had a similar bell on her saddle.

Like you, a warm fuzzy feeling followed me down the trail...
