Nice action photos. I see the rider managed to prevent his head
hitting the ground even with the helmet. I really didn't see anything
to make me think the helmet helped or hindered in this case.

It looks to me like the guy in the blue helmet would have hit the back
of his head. Not a good thing to do without a helmet.

I kind of wish they hadn't been wearing sunglasses so that we could see
the "Oh [censored]" look in their eyes.

Pro races require helmets. I think if its a good idea for them, then it
can't be bad for the rest of us. I'd rather wear a helmet and have some
protection than have nothing between my head and the ground no matter
what the science says.

Heh...pro races also require doping tests, and I have no intentions of
applying _that_ to my routine. ;-)

Personally, I like my helmet. I consider the ability to mount various
and sundry lights, mirrors, and whatnot on my head to be desirable, but
I certainly wouldn't demand that anyone else agree with me.

In general, I regard my helmet as more along the lines of Batman's
utility belt than Captain America's shield, but that's just me...

I really like the look of composure on the face of the guy in red in
pic 2. I didn't even realize he was doomed until I saw where his rear
wheel was. He thinks he can save it still. Gotta love confidence!

The second rider to hit looked to take a major face plant, and it
looked like his helmet did not help him very much.

Next time I find myself about to ride in a groop of ten skinny people
on skinny bikes, all going real fast next to hay bails, I'll go out and
buy a helmet.

Smart move. Now if you can just avoid all distractions and never hit a
pothole or a gravel patch or uneven shoulder surface unexpectedly, you'll
never need one!

OTOH, the types of falls those guys took don't seem all that unusual to me.
