  1. As someone who struggles with the dreaded bunions, I am dreading going out and looking for cycling shoes. I've heard that folks with normal feet sometimes find them a bit snug. Another benefit of my foot is that it's normal sized throughout with the exception of the bunion area..which is really wide (obviously).

A search online has shown me that only men's cycling shoes seem to come in wides. And, as I'd probably be a 37 or 38...none of the wide shoes start that small.

Any suggestions for when I do get up the nerve to start trying them on? Thanks!

  2. Try some Sidi's. Everyone i talk to at the LBS i work at loves them. They're a bit pricey but definitely worth the extra dough after you break them in. For the wider version, you'd be looking at any of their shoes with the "Mega" label.

    Good luck with your search!

Shimano shoes have a generally wider toe box than Sidi ...

There are some Shimano MBT/Touring shoes (the ones whose shape is more like an old pair of KEDS than cycling shoe) which have even wider toe boxes.

Some of the (older) Shimano touring shoes are mostly cloth, and they will be more compliant to your feet's needs; but, the soles will not be as stiff.

Also, if you opt for a shoe which has laces, I think you can get a better fit than with straps.

You could always consider getting ONE Euro-size larger (about a half-size American) IF THE HEAL is snug ...

  4. These could help if you do buy half size larger shoes.

I use the slim sports, and they solved all of my foot pain problems. (not that this directly pertains to the subject at hand). I actually uses these footbeds in all my shoes. I am an avid supporter this company, they know their stuff. Great people.

You may want to look into Rocket shoes; specializing in custom shoes with those of us with wider feet. They have a great website. As I hear it, once you wear their shoes, you will never change again. While the prices are in line with custom made products, in the long run, they may be worth it for you.

    Good Luck,
    Andy
