    I am interested in the new singlespeed commuter from Raleigh, so I
    called my LBS who gave me the cell # of their Raleigh rep. He faxed me a
    spec sheet on the Raleigh One Way:

    Frame: Double butted Reynolds 525
    Fork: 4130 Chromoly "Classic Cross"
    Crank: SR Suntour Single Speed 42T w/chainguard
    Bottom Bracket: Sealed cartridge(no name?)
    Gear: 16T freewheel
    Hubs: 32h Track hubs(no QR, nutted axles?)
    Spokes: 14G stainless
    Rims: Alex AT-400, alloy double wall
    Pedals: Road pedals, clips and straps
    Handlebar: Alloy road
    Headset: Ahead 1 1/8
    Grips: Raleigh
    Stem: Alloy Ahead
    Brakes: Tektro Oryx Cantis
    Brake Levers: Tektro Road
    Tires: Vittoria Randonneur Cross w/reflective sides 700x35
    Seat: Raleigh Road
    Seatpost: Alloy Micro Adjust 27.2mm
    Extras: SKS fenders(w/ mudflaps), Rack mounts, Cateye reflector set,
    clearcoat, owner's manual, and a bell.

    This should retail for $600, so I'm sure Raleigh had to skimp somewhere.
    The hubs and bottom bracket may be the weak link, but SKS fenders are a
    nice spec. I have a feeling those fat tires combined with fenders will
    equal lots of overlap in my 53cm size, though.

    The bike is black with silver accents. I have a honey Brooks B17 which I
    would like to utilize. I will also want to swap the handlebar for a Nitto
    Noodle, so I'm thinking the B17 and maybe honey Brooks leather bar tape?
    What do you guys think of a black bike with honey leather saddle and bar
    tape?

    Natural cork tape looks really nice on a bike with a honey Brooks. You
    can also just darken the Brooks very slightly by polishing it with
    black shoe polish. Basically just a little stays put on the logo and
    any little cracks after you polish it out, and makes it jive with a
    black bike better.

    I'm currently running a Flyer on my black city bike and it looks pretty
    cool:

    An aside, for those that fear monger against the turning of the holy
    Brook nut: it's really not that dangerous. I'd abandoned this guy to
    the parts bin because of sag, but decided to tighten it incrementally
    to get it happy again.2 1/2 turns and it now feels like it just got
    broken in. 1/4 turn at a time, then check with the heel of your hand.
    I'd laced it as well, but then it got *too* firm.

    That's Brodie's doing as they're stock. I wish the rear was as clean
    and mounted to the canti studs or something. Instead, I've got the
    disks, fender struts, and rack all fighting for space. It works in the
    end, but I'll tell ya, never thought it would take the better part of
    an evening to mount a rack.

    I think it's the black frame of the Brooks that make them go with
    almost anything--except a normal silver post. :-P

    You could see if you could find some of that old sew-on leather
    covering in natural, like the old Motobecanes. I think I remember
    seeing it in the Rhode Gear catalog years ago.

    Actually, Velo Orange offers elk hide bar wrap.

    It seems like a pain in the ass to sew it on, but it should last a long time
    and develop a nice bit of beausage on the way.
    Brodie's system for mounting the front fender is pretty cool, indeed.

    How do you find your saddle with being so high in front? I have same Brooks
    seat sitting near level, and while it's fine to sit on, it gives my lower
    back hell.

    How do you find your saddle with being so high in front? I have same Brooks
    seat sitting near level, and while it's fine to sit on, it gives my lower
    back hell.

    I was experimenting with angle. Now the front is just a smidge higher,
    which is the fairly norm way to set them up. Even with the nose high,
    it wasn't pushing on anything, I lowered it to change the angle of the
    rear deck which was buggin' me. I've ridden such an extreme angle on a
    rod brake raleigh which is more upright, with no issues. With a Brooks,
    the angle of the rear half is what really matters.

    It's nice for short trips--and though I rode Brooks for years, and this
    one is as OK as the next, I'm probably gonna throw the original squishy
    Speed-V back on it. Ugly, but a goddamn Cadillac of a saddle. I've got
    sit bones as wide as most women, so if I go back to a Brooks in the
    future for the commuter, it'll have to be a girly model.
