  1. Hi

I'm new in here so thought I'd say hi.

Bought a new cheap generic (ok, mountain) bike from a local shop up here in
Darlington a while ago so I could cycle into work (working in middlesbrough at
the time) then I got a new job with a 40 mile commute each way so the bike's
    been sitting in the shed.

It looks like winter's over with for a few days so I reckon I'll dust the bike
off and get out there. Is anyone else from Darlington or would like to
    reccommend routes?

I come from Darlo but haven't lived there for the past 29 years though I do
cycle there from Leeds several times per year. I recommend that you get an
ordnance survey map of the area and explore some of the quiet backwaters of
Darlington, Bishop Aukland, Northallerton and Richmond. There's plenty of
nice village pubs and village greens sit on and sup all during rest breaks.

A nice but fairly strenuous loop that I do several times per year starts in
Reeth and goes up to the Tan Hill Inn before dropping down to Keld, Thwaite,
Muker, Low Row and back to Reeth.
Here's a link to the route. Don't let the climb put you off. I cope with
    it despite carrying excessive lard.

I'll be doing the loop next weekend as a break from Audax BP rides.

A variation on the ride is to take a left turn and go through the Stang
Forest head for Bowes and return via a green road/RUPP there's temptation
too as there's inviting streams and rocks to ride through and over as you
    ride along the route.

As for winter being over - living in Darlo should have hardened you. I've
been out on my bike every weekend since Feb.

You might want to give the 'Cycle Tours' books published by Philip's a once
over. There are two that are relevant to your needs:

    North Yorkshire Moors
    Yorkshire Dales

    Hope that helps
