I like seeing dawn but if I don't have to get up I usually don't. I'm not a
morning person no matter how pretty the scenrey.

I'm with you on the winter time. Early spring and late fall, I look for
the warmth.

Summer for me, though, I'm looking for the coolest riding time. At
least in Alabama, the humidity is usually highest early in the morning.
Depending on how far I'm going and how hot the day is, sometimes it
feels cooler later in the morning (9-11) or late in the afternoon (4-7)
because the humidity is down. Early or late you get more shadows, if
you can find trees, and the shadows help a lot.

Trees are great all right. I have more or less gotten acclimated to the
heat, though. I suppose it is a good idea if you live in a state where
the largest (I think) race/ride is called Hotter'N'Hell.

time to ride. Today the afternoon temp is ~108 but at 6 this morning I
got in an hour in the 70's.

In the winter the afternoons are in the high 60's or low 70's while

I'm not much of a morning person, even though morning rides have their
advantages: less traffic, and when it's hot in summer, morning is
better. WInds are lighter too. But I am not one of those 6 am types!
Personally, i like riding in the PM. ANd at this time of year, it's
light so late- it's great!

Yes, same here- in spring, mornings are still really cold, so afternoons
are best.

I prefer the cool of the 'Morn, myself. I don't do well in heat, which
is why I find very hard to swallow the reports that it takes more effort
to ride at lower temperatures than higher.

For me, that depends on the moon. Nothing beats riding in the middle of
the night, casting a shadow in the bright moon light, only the switch on
the light upon entering a tree canopy.

I like to ride in the morning anytime between 9:00 and Noon. Here in North
Texas in the morning, the wind is only blowing 10-15 mph. Later in the day
it is usually blowing from 15-20 mph.

I find my blood sugar is the lowest in the morning. Thus the ride into
work is always the slowest. On the other hand, I like the cooler
temperatures and the generally cooler demeanours the automobile drivers
evince. All the aggresive ass-hattery I've experienced has always been
later in the day.

Mornings are nice, though I find I like night-time riding too. The lack
of traffic and the cooler temperatures are really nice. I'd say
afternoons are generally my least favorite times to cycle.

Sometimes it doesn't feel like it, but I am very fortunate that I have
to ride to work at 4:30 a.m. When the dawn breaks, the stars give way to
the colors of sunrise, and there are still so very few people there to
appreciate it, I always say to myself, "I hate getting up this early, but
I love being up this early."

I've done a lot of night riding, but not as much as I'd like lately,
because of my current work schedules. I should again mention that
my night riding is mostly done within well-lit and well-developed
urban environments, where I feel much safer than I would on lone,
winding, roller-coaster-y, 2-lane country highways at night. This
coming Monday I'll be back to working during daylight hours, in a
place that isn't so far/deep into the boondocks (and in a place
that makes sportswear, to boot.) I'm looking forward to living
in normal hours again.

This current time of year is my favourite for riding at night.
The nights are short and warm. The stillness of the night air makes
it so easy to slice through it. With the reduction of traffic noise
and hustle & bustle, one can finally hear one's own thoughts, and
reaffirm one's place (and time) in the world, right here & right now.
The reduction of commercial truck traffic allows one to actually see
what's going on up ahead, but because it's at night and there's not
much traffic, there's nothing going on up ahead anyway -- maybe a
raccoon scampering across a deserted arterial street, or the cops
shaking down a burglary suspect.

The absolute best time is during the pre-dawn, pre-rush-hour hours;
a rider pretty much owns all the streets then.

In the city I don't really need a heck of a lot of lighting.
I daresay, I could probably even get by without any at all,
at least in fair weather. But it's good to have a certain,
non-excessive amount of lighting, so I do. I certainly don't
need to do the Christmas tree/UFO thing, though.
