  1. I recently did a ~50 mile loop from the house. Originally my plan was that I
would do it in the morning, and eat lunch when it was over. But there was a
relatively strong headwind the first 10 miles or so, and it was raining for
much of the time, which always slows me down. By the time I was 30 miles
into the ride, it was later than I would have liked, and I was ravenous.

The next section of the ride was on the Issaquah-Hobart Road. The I-H Road
has a bad rep among cyclists because it has a high speed limit, a fair bit
of traffic, and a "variable" shoulder. But the nice part about the I-H Road
is that it is just a bit downhilly. Not so downhilly that you coast; just
downhilly enough that you cruise somewhat effortlessly, pedalling away, at
about 5 - 10 mph above your normal cruise speed. So I took the I-H Road.
Unfortunately, while on this road, it decided to absolutely pour. Not just
sprinkle, or lightly rain, as it had been for most of the ride. No, pounding
    hard, drenching rain.

My sustaining thought while flying down the I-H Road in this downpour was of
the Shanghai Restaurant, about 10 miles away. I realized that it was just a
block or two off of my planned route. And the Shanghai is one of my favorite
Chinese restaurants in the greater Seattle area. I would cope with traffic,
with the [censored] on the shoulder, with the shoulder suddenly disappearing, with
the pounding rain, with water streaming into my eyes and obscuring my
glasses, because I would have lunch at the Shanghai.

I tied up the bike in the Shanghai parking lot, and stepped into the lobby.
They looked a bit askance at me, and I realized that I was spattered with
mud, dripping in their entry way, and dressed in full bikie gear. But
politeness took over, and they seated me.

It took, I don't know, 50 or 60 million years for the waiter to take my
order. But finally, he did. And then he brought the rice and Szechuan
chicken with garlic sauce that I ordered. Oh god! It was ambrosial! I
thought I'd die a thousand deaths right there, just to have this lovely,
lovely hot food, a mix of spicy, savory, and a tiny bit sweet. The first
    third felt like it was being burned off inside my body almost on contact;
the second third felt like it was restorative; the final third felt
satisfying. It was just hot enough, in terms of temperature, that it didn't
burn the tongue, but just barely beneath that hot, such that it felt
completely warming. I was afraid of getting chilly, with no longer moving
and being so wet, but the food and tea was so hot, I stayed plenty warm.

It's amazing to me, how great food can be on a ride like this. Sometimes
even a bottle of gatorade and a bag of chips from a convenience store can be
    almost miraculous.

The last 10 miles home, even though mostly uphill, were easy after that.

i always liked any salty and/or sweet foods after or midway during a
ride or a hot chocolate when it is cold outside. Here's the catch the
rides has to be short. On longer ones, you become tired of eating and
although you like it as much, you just do want it go down your throat -
that is the unfortunate reality 🙁

    enjoy the food !

Claire, you are a total freaking idiot, but you surely know that, don't you?
I wait anxiously for Sorni and the other idiots of RBM to see how they are
going to try to ingratiate themselves with you. Ah, the power of the female

Ravi, you are almost as dumb as Claire. Maybe the two of you could get
    together for lunch sometime.

Folks who talk about food are beyond the pale. I have known several such
types in my life and they are all without any exception the dumbest of the
dumb. You would not catch the Great Ed Dolan ever even mentioning anything
having to do with food. Eating is something you do in private like [censored].
For Christ's sakes, is there no end to what I am being subjected to on these

be telling us all about their sexual proclivities.

    Claire,

Don't believe it for an instant. I always enjoy reading your posts and
it has nothing to do with your particularly feminine charms. I'm gay and
have no urges which cause me any fascination with the female sex organ. If
Ed Dolan the Great isn't impotent, I believe he is immune to anyone's charms
but his own. He seems to spend an awful lot of time in this forum jerking
    himself off.

Patrick Lamb is one of the biggest cowards I have ever encountered on

poor lost lamb who has gone astray. Usenet is way too big for his kind and

Lamb badly needs to trim himself totally as he never writes anything worth

Yes, a very mindless, childish girl. Hey Mom! Look ... no brains!

But women should only talk to other women and not to men. They should also
talk far away from men so we can't hear them. All women ever do is rattle
men's brains with their senseless prattle and the men of RBM are already
bemused enough without you and Claire contributing further to their
destruction. Please confine your dumb ramblings to your own sex on your own

It's amazing to me, how great food can be on a ride like this. Sometimes
even a bottle of gatorade and a bag of chips from a convenience store can be
    almost miraculous.

It amazes you that food is good when tired and in need of energy?

    Wonders never cease.

Much as I despise your ridiculous posting style (its more embarassing
than funny), I have to agree 100%.

Every newsgroup has their Claire : and every newsgroup has its fair
share of sad individuals who cosy up to them.

"i'm amazed to how yummy food is after a bike ride". Gah.

The OP was drivel of a the most magnificent order.

What do you mean the rides have to be short? That you get "tired of
eating"? Has the world gone mad around me here or something????

have you been out riding all day ?? on such long rides, you have about
five or six meals during the day - in addition to the frequent drinking
of water and some electrolyte when on the bike... Towards the later part
of the ride, it is just too tough to continue eating, regardless of how
yummy the food tastes. digestive system is equally tired and resists any
    more food !!

my point, there is a point at which you simply do not want to eat. On
shorter rides, that isn't the case.

Max, my contributions to these freaking newsgroups all spring from my sense
of noblesse oblige. As a superior person I feel somewhat obligated to
dispense wisdom from time to time to my inferiors. Noblesse oblige is a very
difficult concept to explain. Only us superior types truly know what it is.
Inferior types like yourself will never have a clue.

There is no reason for you to despise my ridiculous posting style. I mean it
to be ridiculous, indeed, I mean it to be absurd. Relax and enjoy the show!
There is nobody here but us fools!

Hadron, you are certainly right about every newsgroup having its' femme
fatale and the legions of men who cozy up to them. I actually feel sorry for
such men. All they want is that a woman love them, but that can never be.
Women only love themselves and their children. They use men to get what they
want out of life and we poor men fall for them like the eternal suckers that
we are. It is the human comedy writ large and one of God's little jokes on
    us.

I have decided that Ravi is a woman as only a woman would want to discuss
food and eating on a public forum. The next thing Ravi will want to talk
    about is her menstrual cycles.
