I'm not sure i've yet got to grips with the "ethos" of Shetland
walking. Everybody ive spoken to seems to say go pretty much
where you like. Which tends to imply you are going to find
yourself climbing over fences in places. However I noticed there
are now "shetland access" signs with stiles here and there in
popular places and the instruction not to climb over fences. In
any case a lot of the fences seem just too high to step over and
not strong enough to climb without doing damage.
At Fetherland there were "shetland access" signs and stiles
alongside locked gates and "beware of bull" signs at every stile,
which made me wonder if there was a GOML dispute going on? BTW I
was amazed to find the fusalage of a crashed airliner in the
garden of a nearby house, hauled up from Sumbrugh in the south on
a low loader! And eight days of continuous sunshine!

Keep to the Access Code (and don't forget there are sections for
landowners/managers as well as you, and they have to play ball too) and

kayaing trips is it's not a problem as long as you're polite about it,

maybe, I didnt generally feel there was any resistance to walking
to need "law", but the reasonable advice not to damage fences by
climbing them left us wondering where to go at times. Most roads
tend to end in a crofting community and it was quite hard to find
where you could park and start a walk without behaving what
seemed inconsideratly. I also get the impression that walking the
coast away from honey pot areas is going to meet a lot of un
stiled fences? We ended up exploring extensively by car to find a
handfull of good access points for the next trip.
