    Russian influence

Since coming into the NBA, Zydrunas Ilgauskas has heard plenty of jeers
about his lanky build, perhaps only recently displaced by taunts about
    his fast-expanding beard.

Looks can be deceiving, however. Ilgauskas actually has a lot of muscle
mass and is devoted to a unique kind of weight lifting that is a
throwback to the days of his youth behind the Iron Curtain in Lithuania.
It's a practice he wears on his wrist with a tiny badge of honor.

The red band simply reads ``Pavel'' and matches one that Cavs strength
coach Stan Kellers wears. It is a tribute to Pavel Tsatsouline, a
Russian trainer who is a leader in the field of kettlebell training.
Pavel -- as he's known -- used to train the Russian Army's special
forces by teaching techniques with kettlebells -- heavy cast-iron balls
    with handles attached.

Over the past several years, Tsatsouline has become somewhat of a cult
hero among weight lifters and strength coaches, including Ilgauskas and
Kellers, who has been known to wear a T-shirt with the old Soviet Union
hammer and sickle and CCCP logo in reference to the kettlebell's origin.
The technique has been used for decades by top Russian athletes and is
    gaining popularity in the West.

``He's all over the Internet; he's very popular,'' Ilgauskas said.
``Stan is a big fan of his and we use those things in our workouts.''

No seriously. I am looking for an exercise routine that I can do in
my office at work and while I think that my Oly barbell would look
funny, I could probably pass a kettlebell off as a really big
    paperweight 🙂.

Now the question becomes is there something magical about the
DragonDoor.com kettlebells that make them worth the premium you pay or
should I just get some kbells from newyorkbarbells.com and pick up
    Pavel's book?

I have some special kettlebells made of quartz crystal that are gauranteed
    to enlighten you.

    They are kinda expensive though.

Yeah, but all the guys in the forum at DragonCrystal.com are using
    them.

Everyone, and I mean everyone, I know who has used other makes of
kettlebells says the DragonDoor ones are worth the extra money. I
bought some from an outfit called "Max" that were very poorly finished -
it's pretty easy to have a ridge in the handle when you cast a
kettlebell, and the Max one had enough of a ridge in it that I couldn't
use it for rep work. I also tried something called a Kettlestack that's
a plate-loaded handle. That was fine as far as doing swings went, but
for snatches, cleans, and other moves where the bell flips around and
ends up on the back of your arm, the edges of plates are distinctly
unpleasant. I've heard of some other places that do make kettlebells
that are of OK quality that aren't DragonDoor but I haven't tried any.

I've got two kinds here - DD and also from http://www.usgsf.com, the
latter are from Russia and are the same size and shape as used in kb
competitions there, while the DD ones are a little bit different. The
smoothness of the handle isn't bad on the usgsf kb's but the DD's are
still better. The usgsf are all slightly bigger and hollow - they come
as 16 kg and you unscrew the bottom and fill them with the heavy
substance of your choice to make them weigh more. The bad news is that
the Russian ones are even more expensive than the DD's.

Some, but not all, fit and finish problems can be resolved yourself with
a file and a can of paint, but one of the good things about the DD's is
that they're unconditionally guaranteed for a year - don't like it, send
it back 11 months later and get a refund. I had an 88 lb.er here that
was borderline in terms of the finish of the handle, and I sent it back
after six months rather apologetically, but their attitude was "if
you're not happy, we're not happy" so I got a replacement.

Visit Bryce Lane's board and ask this question and you'll get some more
    opinions. Link is:

Your best bet, IMHO, is a DD starter kit - you get one kb, one book, one
DVD at a bit of discount from the separate prices. The DD site has good
stuff about picking the right size kb to start with, and there's an
article about that on my site as well.

I just clicked on the link above in your message and it worked fine for

Yes - if you want me to make a commission on your purchase, use

    http://www.dragondoor.com/?kbid=1022

    or

http://www.russiankettlebells.com/?kbid=1022 to get right to the
    kettlebell page

Unless one plans on competing overseas, I recommend the DragonDoor
kettlebells over the USGSF. In my own training, I use the USGSF
kettlebells only for training the competition movements in high,
competition-style reps, and the DD for everything else.

Yeah, I had looked at the kettlestack, and had come to a similar
conclusion. Besides, I think that the whole cannonball-with-a-handle
look is more likely to freak out my co-workers, and that's definitely
    part of the kbell appeal.

If you say the DD kbells are worth the extra money I will take your

considering that I was planning on purchasing one of Pavel's books
    anyhow.
