Got home Sunday afternoon, with 2219.3 kms on the clock, cycling from Mulhouse down the Rhein to Koblenz. Then up and down the Mosel to Thionville before bashing on gently to Rotterdam. Ferry back to Hull and 2 nights at the York cycle show finished off a nice 5 week holiday. Saw (and had an hours trial) a nice Trice recumbent that might get me across USA next year, at the show, as well as making new friends!

I might have seen you. Just back from 2 weeks around Benelux + Germany myself including Koblenz (in car). Those new ferries are fantastic aren't they? We were on the Pride of Rotterdam in a cabin that had a shower and bath, twin beds, Sky TV, telephone, loads of free tea and coffee, stacks of bathroom tolietries and a fully stocked minibar. Couldn't even tell you were at sea, it was that smooth. Plus it's only a 7 mile drive from my front door. -- Simon Mason

It was good to meed various people and great to hear Trevor's Travellers Tales.
I only had one puncture -- on the trailer on about day 5 -- being a low pressure tyre. It picked up a thorn where it was locked up overnight. Didn't notice till I was about to move off! I was on a Schwalbe marathon plus on the rear of my Velo and a continental "Country Ride" on the front ( as supplied when I bought the 601 Discovery. I expected to have to replace the front tyre during the trip since it has no Kevlar protection. However, apart from two occasions when I picked up a sharp flint, and later a shard of broken glass ( on both occasions I stopped within metres and found the offending object), I never got a puncture on it. Both tyres maintained tyre pressure throughout the trip. The only loss of pressure was, I suspect, when I was doing my routine check with the pressure gauge every week - as opposed to the daily "finger" check. I cannot fully express what a delight it is to cycle in Europe as opposed to UK. Of course there are "blind deaf" motorists but they are very few and far between, inclining to zero!
I met a Hollander as I boarded the ferry to Hull. He had never cycled in England before and I just warned him that if there were cycle paths in UK then they would be in poor repair, strewn with hazards such as broken glass and that unlike Nederland's they would have absolutely no priority over any other connecting motorised route -- be it a house car access or any other "car drivable" bit of asphalt! Wrong! He turned up at the York Rally. A custom recumbent with GPS, electric assist, a plethora of lights on the front, and a trailer that had me green with envy - a Thule roof box fitted with strobing lights.
