  1. Bjarne Riis: "I'm a bit disappointed that Landis was allowed to
take so much time, but then we expected him to fade more than he did at
the end. It's difficult to explain how he came back after what
happened yesterday...maybe Landis should explain. It's a crazy Tour."

    1. It's quite conceivable Landis got a transfusion, isn't it?
    2. It's also quite conceivable he paid amazing attention to keeping his
core temperature down, by exploiting the proximity of the team car
to supply him with unprecedented quantities of water. I'm reminded of
RAAM, where one year, I think it was Gary Tetrai who had a team car with
mist generator follow him, spraying him with a continuous shower of
    water on hot days.

or he simply ate more. Not every human feat needs drugs or blood.

Maybe Riis should explain why he allowed Landis to take a 9 minute
lead instead of having Voigt kick in earlier ? Riis took too much dope
    I guess.

I think Riis' question isn't hard to answer. Landis said he had made an
error, but refused to say what it was, except that it was not lack of food.
But see his behavior today: drinking almost every minute and pouring out
more water bottles over his head than I've ever seen in the Tour. So the
most obvious answer is that yesterday Landis suffered from deshydration. He
drank to little and he sweated too much, which of course can be fatal in the
    Tour.

Or the 1986 Mass-Rhode Island District RR where Billy Holmes got two
bottles a lap via mussettes from a lady friend and everyone else got
just one and Billy ended up a surprising 4th....

I think it's pretty clear as well. Probably got weighed after the finish to
confirm it. The beer comment fits in as well.

Of course Riis is going to insinuate and suggest, but that's just what losers
    do.

i am sure that question is on some other folks' minds... i couldn't help
but think: after a day like he had yesterday, Floyd should look like the
label of an iodine bottle and feel like he died and saw the afterlife.

I'm not always suspicious of EVERYONE but this is just a tad too good.
The guy loses 8 minutes and gains them back the next day? Even Indurain
didn't do that after he cracked in the alps. How did floyd manage that?
By eating his wheaties? More like a corpuscle or two.

I thought it was interesting that because he poured SO much water over
his head, he said his earpiece cut out halfway up Joux Plane, so from
there on out he had no idea what the gaps were. He said that's why he
checked over his shoulders those few times entering the finishing
straight. I guess when you're going like a scalded dog it doesn't
    matter that much anyway.

Maybe Riis should explain the abscense of Basso.

    Marlene,

8 minutes can happen awfully fast when you're going uphill. Ever
bonked? Ever get really dehyrated? The body can be put back together
pretty quickly if the previous day's failure is due to these reasons.
In this case, I don't see the "recovery" as a suspicious event.

actually i did bonk and get really dehydrated a couple of times... once
pretty bad. I felt like total hell the next day and couldn't have ridden
my bike up a driveway. Granted, I'm not an elite athlete and don't have
the medical and heatlh attention they get, but I still find it hard to
believe that anyone can resurrect like that in 24 hours.

Did you have an IV saline solution to rehydrate and perhaps a glucose
    drip as well?

He lost all that time in about ten miles. Not even an hour of bad. So it's not
like the guy was out there bonked and left for dead with hours of riding.
Judging by his behavior the next day he may have dehydrated a bit.

You don't have to be all that bad to get dropped by the kind of guys he's racing
against. So an IV, some beer and a few gallons of water is really all he needed
    to be at full strength.

As I've noted several times before, at Jr. Nationals the boys race got
rather heated in the year it was in Witchita Falls. When the group got in
there were a dozen or more that were suffering from the early signs of heat
prostration. The medics plugged saline IV's into them without second
    thought.

Plainly a pro racer would be treated as well.

Not 'smart', planned. Which, of course, is smart, too...

I'm really glad I wasn't anywhere near a computer Wednesday night, or I
would have posted "see, told you so". Well, I did tell you so. I said
Landis couldn't do anything in this Tour, because he didn't have a
strong enough team. I said stage racing was a team sport, and you
couldn't win it solo. I said there wouldn't be an American on the podium
    this year.

OK, I was trolling a bit. But not entirely. And barring the sort of
accident I wouldn't wish on anyone, I was this: flat wrong.

Morning had broken. I found a rather battered tube of Araldite
