shimano 9 speed cassette modification

The outside cog has splines to engage the retainer; your 12t cog will
probably not work as an end cog.

On the other hand, you probably know someone that kept an old 12t end
cog from a cassette wherein the middle cogs were worn and the end cogs
showed little wear. I have a few in my parts bin. Ask your local buddies.

All Shimano 9spd 12t cogs will work in the first position, but you'll need a
lockring designed for a 12-up cassette.

Sure, just find a 13t, even a first postion one and add it..,..
