That's not what they're worth, it's what a fool on eBay will pay, those are not really the same

It amazes me even more that people are willing to pay $60-80 MSRP for Open Pros and the like. Or
even worse, those prebuilt aero wheels that sell for many hundreds, if not thousands of dollars.
They can keep their geegaws and "features" -- I'll take simpler, cheaper, *and better.*

I bought them new for $10-15 a pop in the 70s and early 80s (as E2s). They are good rims, but I
seriously question the sanity of anyone willing to pay $170 for a pair. There are plenty of
rims on the market that are just as good and less than $40-50 a pop, like the Torelli Master.

I think it's a pretty fair price for MA2's from the internet. Why? I have looked around for MA2's on
the internet, on and off, and on ebay, for the past year. There have been ZERO for sale in NOS
condition. The only way to get them was used & laced to hubs.

Unlike some parts, it appears that MA2's were all purchased and laced in the 1970's and 1980's, and
were subsequently worn out. There just don't seem to be old warehouses full of these rims, unlike
other rim types.

There's always someone willing to pay anything for something if he has lots of money and wants it
bad enough. Ebay was made for people like that. But, there are plenty of other good rims on the
market, Ambrosio and FiR to name two. I also agree that the older Mavic rims were of relatively
higher quality than the ones produced today.

But why you toodle around on your wheels, all of us with the aero, prebuilt wheels smoke on you in
the TT's. I think its worth the extra 3 mph.

A few months ago I met a rider who had the Campagnolo Hyperon Wheels ($3000.oo) sew-up tires on his
Carbon Colnago. He seemed like a very caution rider looking for any signs of glass on the road.
Think his gloving the tires every 10 minutes might have slowled him down a bit. -tom

Extra 3mph, my [censored]. If Fred with his 36-hole box section wheels is cruising along at 25mph - a
pretty fit rider, then - and he changes to aero wheels, you imply he'll go at 28mph. Power to
overcome air resistance varies with the cube of speed, and dwarfs rolling resistance at these
speeds; so since travelling at 28mph would ordinarily require (28/25)^3 the power output (about 1.4
times as much), these wheels have reduced the air resistance by nearly 30%.

How's that work? Even if the new wheels generated no air resistance _at all_, 30% of the air
resistance doesn't come from the wheels - the bulk of it is from the rider.
