    From CyclingNews:

UCI president Hein Verbruggen is not concerned about the absence of top = riders like Lance
Armstrong and Jan Ullrich at the World Championships. = Often criticised for holding the World's in
October when many riders = have well and truly finished their seasons, Verbruggen believes that you
= can't please all the people all of the time.=20

"Every organiser cries out for these two names, but in specialised = cycling you can't race the
complete calendar," Verbruggen told Het = Nieuwsblad. "I couldn't care less that they aren't in
Canada. In = Colombia eight years ago we barely had a hundred starters but we got a = fantastic race
in Duitama with Olano a worthy World Champion. I didn't = hear anyone say then 'Yes, Olano won
    certainly, but Armstrong wasn't = there."=20

Looks like things aren't going to change any time soon. I would be nice = to see Ullrich and
Armstrong at the Worlds. Late August just makes so = much more sense for a number of top riders.

    I don't really get it.

The UCI moved the Worlds to October to bribe the Vuelta organisers to move from April to September.
The Vuelta worried that no one would want to do a late season three week tour if the Worlds was
already settled. The Vuelta definitely gets some participants who are trying to maintain form for
the Worlds, but the Spanish riders will always be interested in riding the Vuelta and with the UCI
points available, you'll get other teams, and there is still the crowd that rides the Vuelta in
order to salvage a poor TdF performance.

  4. Worlds has become a complete joke in October. Nobody does it, and then people try to pretend that
the person who wins beat "the best" cyclists in the world. Nothing can be further from the truth.

The 2003 World Champion should be awarded to the same guy who wins the Tour de France, not some
one-day nonsense held in the arctic latitudes during ski season.

October is for Halloween, not Worlds.

Does the UCI wish some of the bigger names showed up? Sure. They won't say that publicly though. But
from their point of view I'm sure they look at the numbers. Has fan attendance dropped overall since
the move to October? I assume there must be preferred seating/VIP sections - Are these sections sold
out? What are the TV ratings? If these stats have climbed even with "nobody" riding, then the move
    has been a success, no?

  8. Well, that's true. The European riders have to focus on the rainbow jersey because they know the
real race with the best competition (Tour de France) will be won by the reigning world champion of
the past 5 years - LA.

Cipollini won a goddamn crit last year in Zolder and Oscar Freire is another one-day punk. Thanks to
it being moved to October, the rainbow jersey has become a clown suit.

Winning the world championships is almost as pathetic as the guy who wins the Giro thinking he's a
good stage racer (yes, exceptions like Indurain and Hinault are noted). But Simoni is a fraud.

It's a good thing Lance gave Simoni one of those stuffed lions on the helicopter rider back down the
mountain - it's the only one he'll ever own.

The Worlds is largely a symbolic race. It's ususally not a real reflection of who is doing the best
that season. The UCI World Cup and or TDF is worth a lot more......

The fact that some of the best riders like LA and JU don't ride the WC is their own fault. You don't
have to be mad at the date but at those riders who show lack of motivation to race in october. You
don't hear classics riders complain. Those guys like Bettini, Boonen, Boogerd, Van Petegem, Zabel,
Paolini etc are already competitive since februari and are still motivated for the WC in october. I
really don't understand why it is impossible for LA and JU to focus on the WC more than two months
after the tour. I don't think their forfaits are caused by the fact that it is physically impossible
for them to peak a second time in their season in october. I think motivation has much more to do
with it. Bettini also road a very intensive, attacking tour and he even peaked in august. But
apparently he doesn't have problems to peak again to the WC one month later.

I think Hein's intent is to diminish the Worlds RR in favor of the UCI World Cup. It would
rekindle the old argument about the Prestige Pernod determining the real world road championship
if the UCI Cup included more than just classics and some free floating wannabe classics.

I like to think of it like this: They want to have a road race that everyone agrees will be for the
championship of that year. They already have a hierarchy for Tours and they already have a points
    classification to win,

    road race too?

They also figured that you should have to show up and win to claim that championship. You get to
wear a special jersey and you get other perks (although they should by UCI mandate get entry in to
any category 1 race, to make the jersey more valuable). Lots of dudes like the idea of winning.

Oh yeah, it was better when it was in August.

    Any questions?

Because the only people that complain are not aware of the importance of the Giro di Lombardia.
Everyone was upset at the revisions the first few years, but I realized that on balance, there was
not a lot that could be done. There were some tough decisions that had to be made and I don't think
there was any way to make everyone happy. It was more a case of pissing off the fewest.

Because the Race of the Falling Leaves has its date and status as the season ending race intertwined
in its history, much like Het Volk and Milan-San Remo define a season's beginning.

Bike racing in October in places like Canada and The Netherlands is pretty barren, in a

It was still pushed back several weeks and it has suffered from smaller fields since then.

  20. Could someone tell me why, exactly, there are only 44 starters for the women's TT?
