  1. This topic isn't restricted to cyclists by the way.

The sports people I admire most :

Steve Redgrave (British rower) : to win five consective gold medals in five consecutive Olympics is simply phenomenal in such a tough sport.

Donald Bradman (Australia, cricketer) : one word - genius. Batting average in test cricket of 99.94. No more need be said.

Ed Moses (USA, runner) : 122 consecutive race wins.

    Eddie Merckx (Belgium, cyclist) :

    Sean Kelly (Ireland, cyclist).

Steve Ovett (British athlete) : fans were either in the Coe camp or Ovett camp. Both men were superb runners in the 1980's - when Britain dominated middle distance running : Ovett for me was the better runner.

Herb Elliot (Australia, athlete) unbeaten during his career as a middle distance runner. Superb ambassador for the sport.

Pete Sampras (USA, Tennis) : great tennis player, great character.

Jack Nicklaus (USA, Golf) : Peerless.

Marvin Hagler (USA, Boxing) : for me at least the greatest boxer. Robbed of his title following agreat fight with Sugar Ray Leonard - Hagler had the best of both attrinutes aggression and skill.

Tefilio Stevenson (Cuba, Boxing) : legendary amateur/Olympic champion : could have gone professional and made literally millions - he stayed true to his
beliefs. Got to admire him for his principles alone.

Graeme Obree (Scotland, cyclist) : did it his way and came out on top.

Paolo Maldini (Italy, football) : class, ability, modesty : great player, great man.

Graham Mourie (New Zealand, rugby) : for me the best flank forward ever.
Intelligent, shrewd, and tactically a rugby genius.
First NZ captain to lead NZ to the Grand Slam - beating two of the greatest sides ever in the process (Wales 1977/78, France 1977/78).

Gareth Edwards (Wales, rugby) : the best rugby player ever in my opinion.
Had it all speed, good hands and tough as nails.
The fulcrum of the Wales side of the 1970's : irreplaceable.

  2. Eddie 'the Eagle' Edwards
Michael Edwards (born 5 December 1963), better known as
Eddie 'the Eagle' Edwards, was the first competitor to represent
the Great Britain and Northern Ireland team in Olympic Ski jumping.

"I think what my Olympic participation shows is that you
don't have to be the best in the world to be popular."

  3. Scott Tinley. He would have raced triathlons even if he was not a pro. He is into sport for the fitness and the challenge, and he continues to race even after retirement. He has done a lot of writing; it is nice to know that there is a brain behind the athlete.

  4. Sir Donald Bradman ( Australian Cricketer)

Darren Lockeyer ( Australian Rugby League Player )

Gordon Tallis ( Australian Rugby League Player )

Gary Abblett ( Australian Football League Super star, otherwise known as the god of AFL )

Kieren Perkins ( Australian swimming sensation )

Lance Armstrong ( An inspiration )

Michael Doohan ( Motorbike racer )

Emma Snowsill ( Triathlete super star, possibly to become the greatest ever )

Emma Carney ( Triathlete Superstar, most dominant in history)

Michelie Jones ( Triathlete and Now Ironman superstar)

Peter Robertson ( Triathlete 3 times world champion and twice runner up from 5 attempts )

Brad Bevan ( Triathlete, greatest ever )

Kay cottie ( First women to solo sail around the world )

Kostia Tzu ( the ultimate boxing profesional )

Martina Hingis ( Tennis, the swiss miss )

Makybe Diva (Well it's a horse but the only horse to win 3 melbourne cups )

The list could go on and on...........

  5. The disabled cyclist who trains in my area. He's one of the fastest locals and rides with one arm.

  6. Goran Ivanisevic (The clown of the ATP tennis circuit.. and he hit lighting bolts for serves too ~A decade of entertainment on and off the courts)

Eric Cantona (For telling that soccer fan to **** off)

Zinedine Zidane (For carrying on the french tradition started by cantona)

Dwayne Johnson (For being the people's champion haha)

  7. Michael Jordan

  8. David Millar.

It must be pretty horrible to go through the stigma and criticism that goes with being banned. But, he has come through it and as much as anything, he just to seems to be dead set on enjoying his cycling and doing the best that he can.

Nicole Cooke, because she's really good.

  9. Tigers Woods. I admire his wife. 🙂

  10. Pantani, (Italy, Cyclist) for sticking it to the establisment sideways and never letting them [censored] him over...

Henrick Larrson (Sweden, Footballer)...for being the most clean living man in sport and greatest role model on the planet....deceny, honesty, fairness..

Seb Loeb (France, Rally Driver) for being a total psycho under 100% control.

    more to follow..

    Sir Stephen Redgrave

Good pick, the best ever at his sport I think. Unbelievable stats. I remember thumbing through his book once, good detail. I wonder if White Boy Trash knew Redgrave participated in this years London Marathon ?

Deena Kastor - American Long Distance Runner - I love seeing her and Radcliff compete.

Steve Prefontaine - Great Long Distance Runner - His life cut short on a winding road. "To give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the Gift."--Steve Prefontaine

    prefontainerun.comprefontainerun.com

Willie Mays - Best Baseball player ever.

Martina Navratilova - I would love to see her (in her prime) and Serena Williams go at it. What a match.

Jean Claude Killy - Best competitive Alpine skier in my book. Race car driver and movie star - Snowjob... remember ?😄

    Roger Federer - Nuff said.

    To be continued.......

Kastors a very very good runner - think Radcliffe and Kastor would be a great match.

    Federer - sublime.
I think he may even surpass Pistol Petes number of grand slam titles.

I have never seen women spit so much as at the finish line of a competitive foot race. Watch where you step .

This picture looks like it was taken in your neck o' the woods.
