I'm planning a Norfolk tour, and putting my route together. One bit takes me between Themelthorpe and Reepham. The OS map shows NCR1 running along a disused railway line. What's the surface like on that bit of the route ? Suitable for 28mm smooth tyres carrying panniers on the bike, etc. Or do you need fatter tyres ?
In fine weather, the track is rideable with smooth 28mm tyres. The surface is reasonably flat, but there's some loose sand in places. That part of NCR1 is not as well used as the bit between Reepham and Norwich, and can get a bit overgrown in summer. In wet weather there are a couple of places where water collects in large puddles, so you may possibly need to wade!!
My advice would be to ask yourself if you wouldn't be better off in the local lanes. Most of the lanes are very quiet in this part of the world.

Thanks Keith, I'll put the route along the lanes.

My wife an I did the Reepham to Norwich part at Easter, really quaint to see the steam train chug past. We even had to put out a fire on the tracks caused by very dry leaves.

The line closed for passengers in 1959, and for freight in around 1969. The track was removed in 1984.
When I were a lad, in the early 50's, we lived a few hundred yards away from the track, at the Norwich end. As with all railway lines, it was a forbidden place. We were always looking for ways to cross the track without being seen, to gain access to the riverbank beyond.
Sorry, it was the one between Aylsham and Wroxham - I just cycle, my wife plans all the routes !

It's a wonderful cycling facility these days.

Without a source of ignition, the dry leaves would not have caused a fire on their own. Therefore they are not the "cause" of the fire.
Tho I feel the need to point out that it was an attempt at humour rather than mindless pedantry, this NG being quick to jump on victim blaming in the press when cyclists get squished.

OK, a small syntactic error, probably caused by a cigarette butt thrown from the train, or a piece of glass acting as a heat source....or a laser beam blast from Obi Wan Kinobi
